3 Test Box Insulated box 42cm x 40cm x 32cm high x 3.5cm wall
Used to test the cooling of the PCBs and ambient temperature rise. Compare with FE results.

4 Cooling Arrangement PCB fan with heat sink used to cool a copper cooling block Copper heat sink screwed to cooling block with 4 BPC5 Resistors producing 5W heat each. Testing at Liverpool in the past shows we can load them up much higher.

5 FE Analysis using ANSYS
Copper Heat Sink K=386 W/m.K Copper Cooling Block K=386 W/m.K Applied cooling to this face 20ºC Thermal Grease K=2 W/m.K Resistor Glue K=1 W/m.K Alumina 5W K=24 W/m.K

6 ANSYS Results Mean Chip Temp 26ºC

7 Space Frame Design Standard 20mm Bosch Profile. Easy Assembly Cheap

8 Sector Prototype

9 Light Guide Ideas.. Made from Aluminium or Stainless Steel
Prototype manufactured using the Wire Eroder at Liverpool Chemically polished

10 Electronics and Cooling
N2 in Water in Water out Water cooling at around +20°C N2 temperature controlled with cooling block attached to water cooling block Cooling and N2 to be manifolded around all 8 modules. Swagelok fittings to be used N2 Out

11 Carbon Fibre at Liverpool
Carbon Fibre Workshop run by Peter Cooke Mould manufacture Honeycomb and Rohacell core experience Woven Cloth and UD high modulus materials LHCb VELO Pedestal ATLAS Upgrade CF/Honeycomb cooled stave

12 Carbon Fibre Box Carbon Fibre Box Proposal Carbon Skins
Nomex or Rohacell core Total wall thickness 10mm

13 Further Work… Work towards a fully functioning prototype
Look into production techniques of light guides…wire eroding and chemical polishing FE Analysis of Cooling Carbon box prototype manufacture
