3 The world we live in is… Complex/Complicated Global/Interconnected
Challenging IMAGE:

4 & exotic pest and diseases
.... Changing World .... Increasing human population Pathogen adaptation Climate change Environmental pollutants Globalization Modernized technology Differences in socio-economic development and traditional livelihoods Deforestation & wild meat consumption Invasion species & exotic pest and diseases

5 Complex problems: systems approach
Food Insecurity Food Safety Poverty Water Insecurity Safe water Climate Change Unsustainable Natural Resources Environmental contamination Political Strife and Conflict Infectious Disease High Priority HIV, TB, Malaria Neglected Tropical Diseases Antibiotic resistance Emerging Diseases Chronic Disease / NCDs Heart Disease Malnutrition Allergies Cancer Diabetes

6 Global Health Security Agenda
“…We must come together to prevent, and detect and fight every kind of biological danger – whether it’s a pandemic like H1N1, a terrorist threat, or a treatable disease.”  President Barack Obama, 2011 President Obama, during his September, 2011 speech to the UN general assembly, said: “… And we must come together to prevent, detect, and fight every kind of biological danger – whether it is a pandemic like H1N1, a terrorist threat, or a treatable disease.” 6

7 Why One Health? Emerging and re-emerging zoonoses
Rapid worldwide spread Serious threats to public health and economic stability Early identification of pathogens and rapid response to outbreaks needed Comprehensive disease detection and response capacities needed

8 Humans + Animals + Ecosystems
One Health What is One Health? The collaborative efforts of multiple disciplines working locally, nationally and globally to attain optimal health for people, animal and our environment (FAO, OIE, WHO, WB…) Humans + Animals + Ecosystems Professionals working together: Interdisciplinary (interactive) Multidisciplinary (additive) Transdisciplinary (holistic) To create BETTER outcomes!

9 OH can be many partners…
Human health: World Health Organization (WHO) Ministries/Departments of Health Community health centers Animal health: World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) Ministries/Departments of Agriculture, Animal Health Farming industry Ecosystem health: Foreign Agriculture Organization (FAO) Ministries/Departments of Natural Resources Wildlife/conservation organizations

14 How do you “do/make” One Health (in academia)?
Identify and/or understand the knowledge, skills, attitudes, behaviors that are necessary for collaboration These are known as the One Health Core Competencies (OHCCs) Map your curricula for these OHCCs Embed these OHCCs into various training platforms Curricula (for students) In Service Training

15 What do we mean by “Core Competency” (vs. Domain)?
Core Competency: Knowledge, Skills, Attitudes, Behaviors to be a One Health Professional Domain: Broader grouping of competencies Management Communication and Informatics Culture and Beliefs Leadership Collaboration and Partnership Values and Ethics Systems Thinking

25 Courses vs. OH Core Competencies
How well does your curriculum align with OH core competencies already? Identify strengths and gaps of your curriculum Use existing courses as an avenue for building OH core competencies Create new courses to bridge the missing core competencies

26 Know Your OH Competencies
Making your curriculum a One Health Curriculum is as easy as ,, Identify Your Gaps Modules Know Your OH Competencies Fill Your Gaps

27 How to Make Your Curriculum a
One Health Curriculum Academic Curricula (pre-service) One Health Competencies (Core & Technical) Learning Objectives Modules Professional Development “Short Course” (in-service)

28 The One Health modules design is flexible and adaptable
MANY OPTIONS/CHOICES: May choose to teach the core competencies as standalone modules May choose to combine elements of modules May choose to teach specific sessions May choose modules to create a new unit in existing course or create “short course” May choose to localize content and change context May tailor to audience of learners

29 Challenges for One Health
Institutional challenges: acceptance, policy engagement Capacity building: One Health Workforce Incentives: how to share credits, added values of One Health. Deeper coordination between sectors on human and animals health and the environmental agencies. Improving the translation of evidence and research into policy.
