Most Canadians support war The war polarized French and English – QUEBEC felt betrayed by King’s slogan “not necessarily conscription, but conscription if necessary. King replaced Min. of Defence JL Ralston with General Andrew McNaughton, commander of Canadian Army from McNaughton could not convince men to join, so conscripts went overseas. Never needed.

The economy flourished after Canada supported war effort. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) tripled

Canada had THIRD largest navy and FOURTH largest air force. · War had a good moral purpose, and made Canada a “great nation”. · A-Bomb dropped by Americans ushered in a new era of nuclear war: MUTUALLY ASSURED DESTRUCTION Women could enlist for services (army, navy, air force) However, women did not fight.

Their property is taken away and not returned. Canada feared they would fight for their country. Mostly applied to Japanese in BC, due to proximity to Japan. JAPANESE in Canada felt racism as they went to internment camps.

TOMMY DOUGLAS: Father of Canadian Healthcare. (1961) Named Canada’s number 1 “Greatest Canadian” by viewers in 2004 on the CBC TV contest Greatest Canadian. CCF won many governments, and Tommy Douglas became the first socialist premier in SASKATCHEWAN THEME: SOCIALIST ideas are becoming more acceptable in Canada.

Soldiers returned home, and Canadians had lots of babies. Known as the “Baby Boom” generation. NUMBER OF BIRTHS IN CANADA

Defeat of FASCISM and NAZISM meant polarization of world between two remaining ideologies: CAPITALISM & COMMUNISM

World divided into EASTERN BLOC (SOVIET) and WESTERN (AMERICAN) Germany and European territory divided. Berlin Wall separates Eastern Germany (Russian) (poor) and Western Germany (Allies) (rich). United Nations set up. COLLECTIVE SECURITY encouraged. Collective security is the idea that everyone looks out for everyone else. If one nation acts badly, all other nations sanction that nation.

The economies of Western countries flourish. Communist countries flounder with no war on... many Russians are poor… but Soviet propaganda makes west think they are a great power.

American and Canadian economies were strong. Europe suffered.

Nuremberg trials ( ) put Nazi war criminals on trial. INTERESTING: The allies were unsure of how to deal with the Nazis. Joseph Stalin suggested executing 50, ,000 Nazi leaders. Not aware he was serious, Roosevelt joked that perhaps 49,000 would be enough. Churchill also suggested executions.
