SNOMED CT E-Learning October 2014 Status & Planning Update (for ELRG)
David Markwell Head of Education IHTSDO
2
Education and Training Audiences
Various possible views of audiences Risk of fragmentation of audiences to a level where focused training cannot realistically provide for all of them Preferred options Small broad groups of audience types Additional learning needs identified by task within these broad groups
3
Education and Training Audiences
General Informal: Basic information on benefits and other topics of general interest Formal: Foundational knowledge for all other audience groups Users Clinicians and other users engaged in entry, storage, retrieval, aggregation, analysis and reuse of clinical information Designers and Developers Those designing, developing, configuring or deploying systems, or standards, that use SNOMED CT Terminology Developers IHTSDO and Members developing and distributing SNOMED CT content and derivatives including subsets, maps and other supporting artefacts Strategy and Procurement General with emphasis on benefits Designer perspective on requirements to support procurement User perspective to support roll-out and user acceptance Educators and Trainers Sufficient understanding of the topics and skills they teach or supervise
4
Training approach for 2015 No assignment funded trainees (unlike current SIA scheme) Assignment for education and training (not for deliverables) No fees for IHTSDO online courses We should not create barriers that limit access to education Cost recovery may be needed in future where there is a need for one-to-one tutoring No face-to-face sessions planned for courses in 2015 Immediate priority is a scalable service within a limited budget Face-to-face sessions enhance interaction and learning and may be considered in future Small online tutorial groups to enable effective engagement Parallel groups based on geographic areas and time zones

Working with Members to deliver E-Learning
E-Learning Reference Group Task and finish focused on E-Learning developments Communication channel between IHTSDO team and Members Meeting on Tuesday afternoon in Amsterdam Member education representative has precedence Open to other Education specialists if space permits Review of training materials Rapid initial review Continuing in use review Sharing of materials Further notes on following slide Guiding on issues of specific interest to Members For example – course entry criteria … discussed later …
35
Sharing E-Learning materials with Members
Access to IHTSDO training source files Allowing reuse and/or translation by Members ELRG CollabNet site will provide access Access will initially be limited to one nominated education representative per Member Responsible for maintenance in line with IHTSDO materials to limit risk of perpetuating obsolete information IHTSDO welcomes access to Member training materials If these can be freely reused by IHTSDO to benefit all Members
36
Course entry criteria Key issues Approach to resolution
Need to establish demand and numbers that we can accommodate within available resources Balancing intake between Members (possibly taking account of specific needs of newer Members) Course accessibility for wide range of stakeholders Advanced course competency based entry requirements need to be met by applicants Must be ready to issue initial call for applications to join Foundation course in early December (for February start) Approach to resolution Entry criteria options will be discussed with ELRG (October 28th) Recommendations from the group to come back to MF meeting in November prior to launch of call for applications
