Appeals to people’s desire to go back to “normal”
Americans want to be very isolationist
No involvement in “foreign entanglements” (stayed out of League of Nations)
Cultural isolation-No desire to allow immigrants into country (nativism)

6. The Rise of Communism
Vladimir Lenin and the Bolsheviks lead a communist revolution in Russia during the war.
They overthrow the Czarist government and assassinate the royal family.
Communism is generally associated with the color “Red.”

8. Effects of Red Scare National Origins Acts:
Immigration Act of and 1924
placed quotas on immigrants coming from southern and eastern Europe, limiting immigration from those regions (this is where a lot of communist governments were established)
Sacco and Vanzetti trial: Two Italian immigrants were convicted and sentenced to death for a store robbery.
Evidence against them was very weak
The men were unjustly persecuted because they were Italian

9. The Palmer Raids
A. Mitchell Palmer, US Attorney General was well known for his efforts to hunt down communists in the United States.
His theory was that communists were a direct threat to law and order and the American way of life and therefore they needed to be deported.
So he proceeded with smashing Union offices and other communist centers as well as arresting suspected communists in the name of National Security.
Eventually his actions are found to be unconstitutional, despite their original popularity.

KKK regains support and grows in South

It is important to note that Northern state governments were being taken over by KKK.

1920s was a time when many Americans wanted a “return to normalcy.” They wanted to expel all those that were “different” and be culturally and physically isolated.
Huge resurgence in nativism leads to Red Scare-effort to expel many immigrants and communist believers
KKK resurges-persecution of African Americans increases.
