Who… All students taking MIS120 in the spring 2006/fall 2006 semesters
IT Architecture and Application Development The “Technology Course” Two part course Part 1 focuses on the technology students will use when they are planning, deploying, and supporting business applications after they graduate (10 weeks) Part 2 focuses on application development (5 weeks)

What… Every student is issued a Dell Axim X51
The device is their’s to keep upon satisfactory completion of the course to be used in subsequent MIS courses

What is an Axim X51? Pocket PC (a.k.a. PDA)
Wireless/Mobile Technology Runs a special version of Windows known as Windows Mobile Runs special versions of Office products: Word Excel Powerpoint Outlook ( /Calendar)

(Temple’s wireless network) Bluetooth Infrared Browser so you can surf the web Boatload of applications available on the web at either no cost or a nominal fee

Why… Devices like these are the Day-Timer of the modern business professional From the CFO to the salesman in the field, mobile/wireless devices are everywhere Help MIS students become more “Tech Savvy” by exposing them to technologies they will use after graduation We want to develop both the IT savvy business professional and the business savvy IT professional!

How… Integrate the Axim X51 into the curriculum of MIS120 during the spring of 2006 Integrate the Dell Axim X51 into the curriculum of other MIS classes in subsequent semesters Integrate the Dell Axim X51 into the everyday lives of MIS students Stimulate innovative thinking through competitions in class and the IT Excellence Competition

Records Management Scenario – GSK? Current process is manual, labor intensive, error prone New process Pocket PC based application to enter all required data, print out records management label, and send electronic pick-up notification Productivity Project – Eliminate the middleman from records management The Un-tethered Retail Clerk Pocket PC based interface into inventory management system Product information available to clerk via Pocket PC Productivity Project – Since clerks are more productive, you need fewer clerks
