Pressure differences in atmosphere cause movement of air worldwide. Air near surface flows from poles to equator, because it moves from high pressure (where cold air sinks) to low pressure areas (where warm air rises).

3 Notes: Global Wind Pattern 11/19 p. 62
Pressure differences in atmosphere cause movement of air worldwide. Air near surface flows from poles to equator, because it moves from high pressure (where cold air sinks) to low pressure areas (where warm air rises). Each hemisphere has three cells of air (air moving in circular direction) that circulate through the entire depth of the troposphere. These are the Hadley cell, Ferrel cell and Polar cell.

4 Each hemisphere has three cells of air (air moving in circular direction) that circulate through the entire depth of the troposphere. These are the Hadley cell, Ferrel cell and Polar cell. Jet streams- high speed winds blow in upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. There is a polar and a subtropical jet stream.
