Eco and Healthy Council
March 2017
2
What have we been doing? We have been busy so far this year, making sure that we are becoming more and more Eco friendly and helping us all to be more healthy at school.
3
What have we been doing? Do you remember Switch Off Fortnight?
We encouraged everyone in the school community, including pupils, teachers and other staff, to switch off lights and devices such as interactive white boards and computers when they weren’t being used, and to turn down radiators rather than open windows. By doing this we will have saved money for the school, and used less electricity, which will have reduced our carbon footprint.
4
What’s a carbon footprint?
A carbon footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide that is released into the atmosphere as a result of our activities, including the amount of electricity we use. We must remember to keep switching off devices and lights when we don’t need them, and encourage teachers to turn down radiators rather than open windows.
5
What else can you do to reduce our carbon footprint?
To continue to reduce our carbon footprint, you could also: Walk, scoot or cycle to school And of course….. Reduce Reuse Recycle Lets watch a song to help us remember what that means...
6
What else have we done? We wanted to encourage wildlife into our school environment. So we made bird feeders, using pine cones and bird seeds, and hung them around the school playground and Eco garden.
7
Our feeders were a success because all of the seeds were eaten…
Our feeders were a success because all of the seeds were eaten….. But what by? We’re not 100% certain, but we assume it was by birds and possibly squirrels.
8
That’s not all we’ve done!
We have also been selling fruit at break times, so that we all have a chance to eat a healthier snack. Did you know that instead of 5 a day, you should now eat 10 portions of fruit or veg a day?
9
How on earth will I do that?!
10 portions a day? How on earth will I do that?!
10
Eat more fruit and vegetables!
One way you can help yourself to eat more is to buy (and eat!) our healthy snacks at break times. Don’t forget, it’s only 20p a piece. We will be asking you what fruit and vegetables you like best, to ensure that we sell the things that you enjoy eating. What’s your favourite fruit or vegetable?
11
What will we do for the rest of the year?
When the weather gets better we will be tidying up, weeding and preparing the pots and beds in the Eco garden and around the school, so that we can plant and grow lots of interesting fruit, vegetables and flowers. We plan to grow potatoes, radishes, beans or peas, sunflowers and sweet peas.
12
As well as teaching us how to grow and care for plants, we will be provided with some healthy foods to try, and we will make our school environment look much more attractive. The pollen from the flowers will also provide a much needed source of food for bees and other insects such as butterflies.
13
Thank you for listening
We hope you will try to be more eco- friendly and healthier, and enjoy seeing what we grow!
