1 VISIONARY STEWARDSHIP

2 WHAT I HOPE TO SHARE TODAY
Why having a compelling vision is so important for growing generous faith Developing mission and vision statements is the first step in creating a culture of generosity to fund ministry Connecting Ministry vision God’s blessings Personal resources Dynamic, resourced ministry and mission

3 Why Is A Compelling Vision So Important?
We Can Be Easily Influenced By The Trending Messages Around Us And Can Lose Our Way Need Clear Sense Of What We Are Called To Do And Become

4 Growing A Culture Of Stewardship
Mission – a clear sense of what we are called to do. Clearly articulate what God is calling YOUR church to DO in your context today. Vision – who we are called to become when perfectly fulfilling that mission. See clearly in your mind’s eye WHO you will BECOME if perfectly fulfilling that mission

5 AMERICAN GRACE BY: ROBERT PUTNAM AND DAVID CAMPBELL

6 Between one-third and one-half of all American marriages are interfaith
Roughly one-third of Americans have switched religions at some point in their lives Young people are more opposed to abortion than their parents but more accepting of gay marriage Even fervently religious Americans believe that people of other faiths can go to heaven Religious Americans are better neighbors than secular Americans: more generous—but the explanation has less to do with faith than with their communities of faith Unique among nations, America is deeply religious, religiously diverse, and remarkably tolerant. In recent decades the nation’s religious landscape has been reshaped.

7 AMERICANS HAVE BECOME POLARIZED ALONG RELIGIOUS LINES
HIGHLY RELIGIOUS AT ONE END AVOWEDLY SECULAR AT THE OTHER END THE MODERATELY RELIGIOUS MIDDLE IS SHRINKING

8 THREE SEISMIC SHIFTS THAT HAVE CAUSED THIS SECULARIZATION
THE SEXUALLY LIBERTINE 60’s WHICH PRODUCED A PRUDISH AFTERSHOCK OF GROWTH IN CONSERVATIVE RELIGION AND AMERICAN EVANGELICALS WHICH CAUSED AN OPPOSITE REACTION AS A GROWING NUMBER OF AMERICANS HAVE COME TO DISAVOW RELIGION.

9 CREATE A DIFFERENT KIND OF CHALLENGE FOR THE CHURCH TODAY
POLARIZATION AND PLURALISM CREATE A DIFFERENT KIND OF CHALLENGE FOR THE CHURCH TODAY

10 Post World War II Church Model Is Ineffective
ASK OURSELVES – WHO ARE WE WHERE DO WE LIVE WHAT IS GOD CALLING US TO DO WHO COULD WE BECOME IF WE WERE PERFECTLY DOING GOD’S WILL

11 FIRST… DEFINE YOUR MISSION AND VISION

12 STRONG VIBRANT CHURCHES HAVE PASTORAL AND LAY LEADERSHIP THAT CAST A COMPELLING VISION

13 Visionary Stewardship Begins With Defined Mission and Vision
A COMPELLING VISION IS A DEFINING STATEMENT AND CREATES A MOVEMENT

14 REDEEMER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH MANHATTAN

15 A COMPELLING IMAGE OF SOMETHING WE WANT TO MAKE REAL
~VISION~ A COMPELLING IMAGE OF SOMETHING WE WANT TO MAKE REAL

16 MISSION and VISION STATEMENTS
REVISIT THEM ANNUALLY REFINE THEM EVERY FEW YEARS WITH NEW SET OF CHURCH LEADERS INVOLVE AS MANY AS POSSIBLE THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA AND ONLINE SURVEYS

17 DO YOU MAKE YOUR VISION AND MISSION CLEAR??
THE RESOURCES YOU SEEK TO RAISE HELP YOU FULFILL THE MISSION AND VISION THAT YOUR CHURCH MEMBERS HAVE CREATED, REVIEWED AND REFINED

18 SECOND… CLEARLY STATE YOUR CASE FOR MINISTRY

19 CREATE A DOCUMENT THAT MAKES A COMPELLING CASE FOR THE CHURCH’S EXISTENCE

20 THIS IMPORTANT STEP TAKES THE DEFINED MISSION AND VISION OF THE CHURCH AND CONNECTS THEM WITH THE MINISTRIES OF THE CHURCH

21 A WELL ARTICULATED “CASE FOR MINISTRY” WILL INCLUDE: A Brief, Relevant History Of The Church An Expression Of The Mission, Vision And Priorities A Description Of The Perceived Challenges, Needs Or Opportunities The Proposed Ministry Solutions To The Challenges, Needs Or Opportunities

22 Costs Associated With The Ministry Solutions And Plans For Raising The Needed Funding
A Closing Statement That Focuses On The Primary Areas Of Ministry Benefit And The Urgency Of Addressing The Challenges At This Time

23 “CASE FOR MINISTRY” IS NOT THE SAME AS “STATE OF THE CHURCH” A “Case for Ministry” engages members with URGENCY to act

24 Why should THIS CHURCH (your identity)
Do THESE MINISTRIES (your mission) NOW (urgency) To CHANGE LIVES (vision)

25 THE “CASE” IS THE TOUCHSTONE FOR ALL YOUR COMMUNICATION

26 THIRD… CELEBRATE MINISTRY IMPACT OFTEN!

27 QUANTIFY MINISTRY IMPACT
~ TELL YOUR STORY ~ HOW ARE LIVES CHANGED HOW MANY FAMILIES HOW MANY MISSIONARIES QUANTIFY MINISTRY IMPACT

28 NEGATIVE TRENDS TO DEVELOP
FAILURE TO “TELL YOUR STORY” WILL ALLOW TWO NEGATIVE TRENDS TO DEVELOP

29 FIRST – CHURCH MEMBERS WILL FILL THE VOID OF INFORMATION WITH THEIR OWN SPECULATION

30 SECOND – The ministry, mission and vision of the church will become less relevant even for the people on the inside Telling the story serves as a constant reminder of why we do the things we do

31 USE A VARIETY OF SETTINGS
TO TELL THESE STORIES Classes Church events Gatherings

32 USE A VARIETY OF VOICES TO TELL THESE STORIES
Personal testimonies from a variety of people We share an INCARNATIONAL FAITH which is best expressed by the incarnational witness of transformed lives

33 USE A VARIETY OF MEDIA TO TELL THESE STORIES
Facebook Twitter Instagram Blogs s Images on a CONSTANTLY UPDATED web site

34 ALWAYS FRAME THE MESSAGE IN TERMS OF CHANGED LIVES

35 FOURTH… CHALLENGE (some would say require) LEADERS TO LEAD!

36 THE ICE CUBE IS MELTING By Lyle Schaller

37 “The number one point of commonality of growing churches…
“The number one point of commonality of growing churches….is that numerically growing churches tend to project internally consistent and clearly defined high expectations of people…”

38 Ask them to lead FINANCIALLY
~START WITH YOUR LEADERS~ Ask them to lead FINANCIALLY BOARD MEMBERS MEMBERS WITH MAJOR GIFT POTENTIAL MINISTRY LEADERS

39 THE WAY TO BUILD SUPPORT
IS FROM THE TOP DOWN AND THE INSIDE OUT

40 IT IS HEALTHY TO ASK LEADERS TO LEAD THE WAY IN:
Spiritual Growth – being part of an active faith formation Generosity – pledging first and growing in generous faith Service – being involved in ministry and mission

45 INVOLVEMENT LEADS TO INVESTMENT
A way to grow ownership of Biblical stewardship among members is to involve them in the process Grow a team of callers to contact all members to talk about ministry

46 SIXTH… Give church family members multiple opportunities to give
