2 Close Up: Our Program & Mission
Close Up is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that educates and inspires young people to become informed and engaged citizens. Since 1971, Close Up has partnered with schools across the country to bring over 750,000 students on our hands-on, educational programs in Washington, D.C. Using the nation’s capital as a living classroom, students get a “close up” view of American history, government, and democracy in action. Connect what they’re seeing and doing to their own lives Build skills and dispositions that will enable them to participate in efforts to improve their communities How does this work? Like any visit to Washington, we want to get students out in the city to see monuments, memorials, and museums….

3 Close Up’s Teaching Method
Close Up trains its own staff of full-time teaching fellows to deliver an engaging curriculum that helps students connect what they are seeing in DC to what they have learned about in school. Students are divided into small workshop groups of students and partnered with a Close Up instructor. Teaching fellows are all college graduates who receive over 120 hours of middle school training.

4 Program Highlights Jefferson, FDR, and MLK Memorials: Examine and debate the size & scope of government. War Memorials: Explore the role citizens played during each conflict at the Vietnam, Korean, WWII and Lincoln Memorials. Smithsonian Museum: Explore the American History, Natural History, Air and Space Museum, or National Gallery of Art. Mock Congress and Capitol Hill Day: Participate in an in-depth simulation of the legislative process followed by a visit to Capitol Hill and a meeting with legislators. Arlington National Cemetery: Visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, JFK Memorial, and witness the Changing of the Guards.

5 Safety and Security Safety is our #1 priority – Close Up provides 24 hour supervision and instruction on program: Supervision: Students are chaperoned by Close Up staff at all times and accounted for via roll calls at all Close Up-led program activities, 7:00 a.m. through 10:00 p.m. Night Monitors: Close Up’s professional security staff monitors hotel hallways each night from 9:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. Medical Care: Close Up partners with Georgetown Children’s Medical Center to ensure students have access to quality health care while on program.
