1 245: NSF grants awarded 3: NSF research centers/facilities
Utah THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) is the only federal agency whose mission includes support for all fields of fundamental science and engineering. BY THE NUMBERS Utah in FY 2016 $63 Million: NSF funds awarded 25th: National ranking in NSF funds 22: NSF-funded institutions 245: NSF grants awarded 3: NSF research centers/facilities “Science, technology, engineering and math are essential to prepare our students for high-tech, high-quality and high-paying jobs.” − Gary Herbert , Governor EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED RESEARCH IN UTAH Researchers at Utah State University are using an NSF grant to develop a novel adhesive made from recombinant spider silk. This adhesive is flexible and can bond most surfaces. It may be especially useful for closing wounds in humans. An NSF grant is helping researchers at nView Medical Inc. to develop a low-dose x-ray imaging machine that can allow surgeons to see what is going on inside a patient in four dimensions in real time, reducing medical errors and saving money. Brigham Young University, supported by an NSF grant, is developing an unmanned aerial systems center to improve the design, operation, and management of military and civilian drones. Courtesy: INVESTMENT IN SCIENCE = INVESTMENT IN UTAH The University of Utah is ranked 40th nationally in research and development expenditures among all U.S. universities. NSF-funded research contributed to the generation of 5,774 patent awards in Utah between 2010 and 2014. Nearly 63,000 Utah residents work in science and engineering occupations. Utah companies received $801 million in venture capital in 2014. Utah has about 7,500 high technology businesses that employ nearly 130,000 people. Utah companies received over $18 million in Small Business Innovation and Research grants in 2014. 2 Utah Since 1952, NSF has supported nearly 50,000 graduate students through research fellowships. Utah received $9 million in NSF educational funding in FY 2016. THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) not only funds cutting-edge research at institutions across the country; NSF’s education initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global leader in innovation for generations to come. EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN UTAH The University of Utah is using a grant from the NSF to develop an interactive lab program that provides underrepresented students an opportunity to experiment on sludge bioreactors. Southern Utah University, funded by an NSF grant, is providing scholarships for students, particularly from rural and isolated areas in Utah, to pursue STEM degrees so that they can bring back important skills to traditionally underserved areas of the state. The NSF has provided nearly $6 million for Utah universities to support Graduate Research Fellowship programs, which allow promising young scientists to move forward in their graduate educations. An NSF grant to the Salt Lake Community College is helping to expand diversity in STEM fields by providing support for underrepresented groups, particularly women and minorities, to complete STEM degrees. Courtesy: “NSF Graduate Research Fellowships are the nation’s most prestigious graduate awards in science and engineering.” − Stan Albrecht , former president of Utah State University “Science is the foundation for so many different facets of modern life… science and math skills [are] so essential for personal and economic success in the 21st Century.” − Gary Crocker, venture capitalist Coalition for National Science Funding (CNSF)  1527 Eighteenth Street, NW  Washington, DC 
