External Awards
The Graduate School supplies a list of known upcoming scholarship and fellowship deadlines and workshops to Directors of Graduate Studies and Graduate Advisors each semester.
Check with your grad advisor if you’re not receiving the list and would like to, OR sign up on our website for digests of upcoming opportunities, as well as workshops and related events on campus:

7. Identifying Opportunities
It may be daunting to consider applying for these external awards, but we have found that University of Utah students are competitive nationally and among the PAC-12. Your chances increase the moment you apply! Example: Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Prior to 2015, the Fulbright Program was not advertised among U students, and few were aware of it. The University submitted a handful of applications each year, and won very few awards: 0-1 per year. After making students aware and increasing application attempts to ~15 per year, the University of Utah’s applicant success rate increased to around 30%. We have found that our students are competitive applicants - once they decide to apply!

Start Early! It takes time to craft a successful application, and it’s difficult to go it alone. Attend workshops, get feedback from everyone, and revise, revise, revise!

16. Post-Award Assistance
Once you’ve been awarded:
Most external awards are managed at the department level, but please feel free to contact Jolyn if you’re not sure what the award covers or how it should be administered.
Tuition benefit is available to fellowship recipients if:
The award does not cover tuition, or only covers partial tuition
AND
The funds are distributed to the University before being disbursed to the student, i.e. the award is managed by the University.
