2 Objectives At the end of this presentation, students should be able to: Identify the purpose of an elevator speech Describe the elements of an elevator speech Develop a prepared response to “Tell me about yourself” Recognize the DESC model for conflict resolution

3 What is an elevator speech?
A clear, brief message Lasts about the length of an elevator ride 30 seconds to 2 minutes Communication with a purpose What are you trying to accomplish? What do you want as a result of the communication? Avoid “data dump”, rambling Listener should want to follow-up

Professional Networking Meeting others in your profession Meeting those in related/other professions Workplace Communicating with other departments about your role within an organization Interview Showcasing your strengths for residencies, internships, jobs. Secures the Next Meeting

5 Before you pitch Get to know your audience Identify your goal
Who are you speaking with? How could this benefit the audience? Identify your goal What is the objective of your pitch? Connect and relate to your audience! “Tell Me More” Conversation

An opening statement or question that grabs attention (“A hook”) Introduce yourself and share your passion or interest Identify commonality/Reason to meet again Getting a raise, needing something from your boss

4) Call for action What is the most wanted response after your elevator speech? A business card, a referral, or an appointment for a presentation after your speech? Exchange contact information Getting a raise, needing something from your boss

Use a story that best showcases who you are and your experience Make strong short and powerful sentences Memorize key points and practice Create different versions for different situations of your elevator speech
