Declaration of Miami Joining forces for better pain treatment and promotion of pain medicine throughout the world Advances in public health, health science and medical practice will result in an increase in the population of healthy people of all ages throughout the world. There is at present inadequate access to assessment and treatment of acute and chronic pain in many parts of the world. There are major deficits in the knowledge of many healthcare professionals into the mechanism and management of pain. Most countries are unaware of pain as a health problem and there are inadequate levels of research and education in pain management. The World Health Organization estimates that three-fifths of the global population lives in countries with poor or zero access to adequate pain care for pain sufferers.
