2. What is MEDIA?

3. Media refers to the communication of information and messages to the masses through various channels.

4. Different types of media
Media can be divided into three main types:
Paid media - Publicity or awareness that has been paid for or purchased, such as advertising (TV, print, online) or direct mail campaigns
Owned media - Communications managed through internal platforms, such as your own website or social media platforms
Earned media - Editorial coverage or media mentions reported by third parties, such as news organizations, external social media channels or word of mouth
Media can also be classified as old media or new media

5. Old Media
Old media or traditional media includes broadcast and print sources such as TV, newspaper, radio, magazines and flyers
Key characteristics:
- Typically one-way communication
- Delivered at a specific time
- Limited geographic or jurisdictional reach
- Strives to maintain journalistic integrity and standards

6. New Media
New media is content that is easily accessible on devices through the internet, such as online sources and social media platforms
Key characteristics:
- Interactive
- User-driven
- Borderless
- Functions in real-time

7. The News Media
The news media play an essential role in contributing to a well-functioning democracy
It is their job to inform citizens about current affairs and ensure accountability and transparency from our elected officials and governments

9. Facts vs. Opinions
In most cases, the news media provides factual coverage to inform the public without letting opinions (biases) interfere
The news media also produces opinion pieces or editorials, where their editorial team, columnists or pundits will openly share their opinions and analysis (commentary)

The government is to blame for the out-of-control housing market
The government has invested $29 million for supplies and resources to help reduce costs for parents and teachers to deliver B.C.’s new curriculum
The best way to support families is to increase support for childcare
The graduation rate has increased two percent among B.C. students over the last two years
