Keyboard The most common input device
The users presses the key desired causing the key to be displayed on the computer monitor Types of keyboard: -concept -left handed -projected -alpha numeric

Mouse A handheld device that is moved on the surface of a desk or on a mouse pad Uses of the mouse -for selecting a menu -for highlighting icon or text -as a pointing device Types of mouse: -trackball -laser -touchpad

The joystick A device with a stick perpendicular to its base
Mainly used in playing computer games The user moves the stick causing an object on the screen to be moved

A touch screen A special screen that is sensitive to touch so you do not have to use a keyboard or mouse

A touch pad A flat rectangular surface which senses movement of a finger on its surface Usually found on laptops

A light pen Similar to a mouse you can move it over the screen and point at items on the screen to input data

Biometric system Uses the person body to uniquely identify them
Can use fingerprint, face, voice or eye recognition Mainly used for security

Scanner A scanner allows you to transfer picture, graphics and text to your computer It scans the image from top to bottom and transfers it to the computer

Microphone It’s a voice input device
Data is entered into the computer by voice such as printing or turning spoken words into text

Webcams or Digital Camera
Device used to input images into the computer Can be used to see each other while chatting online or to capture video on the computer

Barcode reader A device that is used to read barcodes using a wand or fixed scanner The reader scan the barcode and enter data directly into a system

Smart card A card with a magnetic strip at the back used to hold information The information is collected from the card by swiping through a machine Types of smart cards : Debit card Credit cards Store cards Atm cards Phone cards

Optical mark recognition (OMR)
A device that scans a characters on a shet of paper and add all the data into the computer Uses: For lottery ticket In multiple choice exams

Optical character recognition (OCR)
A device that is used to scan text on a document The scan text is turned into a file that can be edited

Magnetic Ink Character recognition
A device that detects the presence of the magnetic ink and interpret the characters They are commonly used in banks for cheques and is very fast and accurate
