COURSE DESCRIPTION Emphasis: Photographic Aesthetics
Creativity and Inventiveness Hardware (cameras, basic lighting, scanners as needed, printers, drymounting equipment) Software (PhotoShop CS5, Bridge, ACR) Presentation (printing, mounting, service bureau)

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: In-class quizzes and exercises
20% of final grade 6-14 during the semester Based on demos, lectures, and other related material / cover camera operation, software techniques, basic photo concepts In-class, generally due by end of class

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Projects
50% of final grade (some projects co-graded) 4 during semester Creative topics introduced in class with images examples Must be ready on critique date or loose one letter grade for each late class Not accepted after end of second class following critique Expect to spend $45-60 over semester

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Research Presentation with Response Images
10% final grade 10-15 minute presentation to class on a contemporary photographer (from list) Researched from books & web Illustrated with images of photographer’s work Includes 3 images you make “in the style of…” Co-graded

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Contribution to the Class
15% of total grade Participation in discussions and critiques Presenting work at critiques Demonstrate interest in continuous improvement of photographic skills as demonstrated in utilization of class work periods

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Attendance
Since participation is impossible if you’re not here, I also note attendance and deduct points from your final grade for absences and tardiness: 1 absence No deduction 2 absences 2.5 point from final grade 3 absences 6 points from final grade 4 absences 1 letter grade (and it gets much worse) 3 tardies = 1 absence

CLASS REQUIRMENTS: Final
5% of your total grade The submission of a DVD containing: all presentation files from projects all exercise files

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Extra Credit
Must first be cleared with me but may include paper on the follow: History of Photography overview videos DVDs on photographers Related exhibitions you’ve attended Lectures (at KU and otherwise) All extra-credit work must be submitted two weeks prior to the last class of the semester

GRADES Can be accessed on D2L “A” students:
produce above average photographs arrive on time and prepared for every class participate in discussions and critiques use class time wisely by: working on upcoming projects for this class researching photographic topics on internet working through lynda.com tutorials

ACADEMIC HONESTY Photographs and research must be yours
Must be made for this class (except if otherwise permitted) Can’t be double-counted except by permission of both instructors

CLASSROOM DECORUM (part of participation grade)
Punctuality counts – class starts on time Cell phones ringers off – no calls in class Give full attention to anyone addressing class: no talking to your neighbor no heads on desks no checking internet or no wandering in and out of the room No napping
