Positive Parenting

2 What is Positive Parenting Anyway?
“Each day of our lives we make deposits in the memory banks of our children.” Charles R. Swindoll Positive Parenting is an approach based on the psychological work of Alfred Adler and Rudolph Dreikurs and follows a respect based communication model . Positive parenting and positive discipline utilize common sense, the setting of healthy boundaries, modeling and healthy communication to impart the lessons needed for our children to learn and to create an environment for our children to thrive. As a student, you will learn and practice positive and effective parenting, while engaging children in a practical child development setting. In this course, you will have fun activities to perform for the class, engage in interesting discussion topics, and participate in weekly assignments as mandated by the instructor.

3 Certificate of Completion/ FHDC
All courses are designed for the adult student to earn a Certificate of Completion through the San Diego Continuing Education Department. The requirements are mandated for all participating students and are as follows: Required hours to be eligible for Course Certificate of Completion Required Attendance per semester. Demonstration of the mandated competencies for eligibility. Active participation in all assignments required for the course. All Certificates of Completion are in conjunction with the Family Home Daycare Certificate for those students enrolled in that program. “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” Frederick Douglass

5 Instructor Expectations
“When we yell, children hear. When we talk, children listen.” Anonymous Provide an art project for the class to perform, once during the semester. Provide a story to read to the class, once during the semester. Provide a song and dance for the class to learn, once during the semester. 6 Positive Parenting Approach: You can do it!
“It takes a whole village to raise a child.” African Proverb: “Ora Na Azu Nwa” What you say influences your child: Be effective. Words and actions are the same, keep your actions consistent with your words: Be consistent. Participation shows love and concern: Be an active parent. Attention given by you will give you a window into your child’s life and mind- know your child: Be attentive. Appropriate response will ensure appropriate action. Prevention is the best deterrent. Prevent issues before they arise. Monitor what your child sees and hears. Mentor through actions, communication and activity. Model positive behaviors and communication for your child to follow.

7 Positive Parenting Works!
Positive parenting gives children an environment to build a healthy foundation for learning. Positive parenting provides children the social tools needed to for healthy relationships. Positive parenting gives children the relationships needed to develop trust and promotes healthy emotional well being and self- esteem. Positive parenting strengthens problem solving and coping skills and provides the tools needed for healthy communication. Positive parenting strengthens the bonds between caregiver and child, and provides a foundation for lifelong communication.
