What is a coalition? 1. Emphasis on broad representation/open participation 2. Broad approach to an issue 3. Bottom-up decision-making 4. Community mobilization 5. Long-term goals The core features of coalitions are identified as follows: 1. Emphasis on broad representation/open participation 2. Broad approach to an issue 3. Bottom-up decision-making 4. Community mobilization 5. Long-term goals Literature does not use one definition for coalition Pulled out the most common factors that differentiate coalitions from task forces, alliances, networks etc. Go over the five features and what they mean- giving examples Berger, Samantha. (2013). Harvesting the Wisdom of Coalitions. Edmonton, Alta.: Government of Alberta and Early Child Development Mapping Project, University of Alberta.

What factors impact coalitions’ sustainability?
Larger Ecological Factors Concrete, measurable ‘wins’ Vision and purpose Leadership Dollars and Resources Training Marketing Community History Membership Quality of Relationships -These factors can’t be ‘ranked’ in terms of which affect sustainability the most; however, I would like to highlight three that came up over and over as factors that impact coalition sustainability: -Vision and purpose -Clarity -Ownership (related back to dollars and resources, marketing- creating community ownership) -Membership -Diversity (relates back to definition) -Retention (related back to concrete, measurable wins, technical assistance, relationships) -Leadership -Facilitator -Not pursuing self interest -Believes in the benefits of collaboration Berger, Samantha. (2013). Harvesting the Wisdom of Coalitions. Edmonton, Alta.: Government of Alberta and Early Child Development Mapping Project, University of Alberta.
