Heat Transfer

Heat can travel from one place to another in three ways: Conduction, Convection and Radiation. Both conduction and convection require matter to transfer heat.

Conduction Conduction is the transfer of heat by the direct contact of particles of matter. Conduction takes place in all forms of matter.

Convection Convection is the transfer of heat through the motion of fluids such as air and water. Convection takes place in fluids: liquids and gases.

Radiation Thermal radiation is heat transfer in the form of electromagnetic waves, including light. Sunlight is radiated through space to our planet without the aid of fluids or solids.

Conductors Materials that allow heat or current to pass through them easily are called conductors. An Examples are copper, gold and aluminum.

Insulator Materials that do not allow heat or current to easily pass through them are called insulators. Examples are rubber, glass, and wood.
