Chapter 1 Summary When the story begins, Bilbo is outside enjoying his pipe when an old man with a cloak and a staff arrives. It is the wizard Gandalf, and he asks if Bilbo would like to go on an adventure. Bilbo declines, and invites him inside for tea to not seem rude. The next afternoon, Bilbo hears a knock at the door, and assumes it is Gandalf. It is a dwarf names Dwalin who pushes past him and sits down to eat. Other dwarves begin to arrive, and soon Bilbo’s house becomes crowded with dwarves trying to prepare a meal. Gandalf arrives with the head dwarf, Thorin.

Chapter 1 Summary (Continued)
Gandalf has selected Bilbo to be the “burglar” on the dwarves'’ adventure. When Bilbo objects to this decision, the dwarfs make fun of him. Gandalf tells them that there is more to him than what meets the eye. Thorin’s grandfather Thror was a miner, and had discovered great treasure. He had become King under the Mountain until Smaug, the dragon, killed or scared all of his people away. Gandalf has a map to the mountain that shows the side door, and Thorin has the key.

Literary Devices Tolkien uses imagery to describe the hobbit hole.
Allegory – connections to hobbits and English people during his time and connections between himself and Bilbo Both direct and indirect characterization is used to describe Bilbo.

Important Quotes - Gandalf
“Let’s have no more argument. I have chosen Mr. Baggins and that ought to be enough for all of you. If I say he is a Burglar, a Burglar he is, or will be when the time comes. There is a lot more in him than you guess, and a deal more than he has any idea of himself. You may (possibly) all live to thank me yet.” - Gandalf
