3 KS4 Curriculum Core Choices Wider Learning

4 CORE in 2017 (Part 1) Mixed ability teaching groups
2nd World Religion and more source materials Religious Education All students follow English Language and English Literature Sets with smaller intervention group – no tiers of entry English Sets with a smaller intervention group – Foundation or Higher tier - enriched, tougher content and formulae Maths Personalised pathways - triple or combined science Science

5 Core Subjects in KS4 All MUST take these subjects RE English Language
English Literature Maths Combined Science* Biology, Chemistry, Physics^ Total = 6 or 7 GCSEs Depending on the pathway, Science GCSEs count either 2 or 3 grades * Combined Science will be a ‘double grade’ and will likely to be taken by some of T Band and all of V band ^ The single Sciences are accessible to T1 & T2 and some of T3

6 EBACC in 2017 (Part 2) All students select either Language but NOT all will follow Languages at school’s discretion ( *we will contact parents where BTEC pathway is advisable) Overseas visits are NOT part of the GCSE course French or Spanish or BTEC* Field Trip and data gather activities are integral to assessment and MUST be attended (Calshot, local area surveys, Isle of Wight) Geography Any overseas visits are NOT part of GCSE course (USA, Berlin, or Auschwitz) History

BTECs offer a more vocational and applied learning context They are included in the Woolf report and are approved GCSE equivalents recognised by colleges and universities

12 KS4 Curriculum Updates New GCSEs began in vast majority of subjects * New grading – 1-9 in all subjects for 1st time in 2018* Linear Model – means end of course exams and need for familiarity and organisation from Day 1 English Baccalaureate (EBACC) remains ‘common currency’ and ‘gold standard’

Complete by Wednesday 16th Feb 2017 - Signed and dated, please Return to school office marked for the attention of Mr Bazen Senior staff begin to schedule – contact made ONLY where problems arise Confirmation of pathways in Summer term, usually mid/end of June

20 What happens in Sept 2017? GCSEs commence in Sept 2017
– NO changes can be made after 30th September 2016 Subject changes may be requested in writing to Mr Bazen up to 30th September 2017 Following consultation and discussion, and ONLY if there is space within the group will a change be approved – written confirmation will be sent from school if this is the case Any final decision regarding group sizes or if subjects will run remains with Mr Wright, Headteacher
