Who were the settlers, leaders and neighbors?
John Smith Settlers: English adventurers and soldiers, English and African indentured servants or field laborers, farmers Leaders: John Smith, (John Rolfe, William Berkeley and Nathaniel Bacon) Neighbors: Powhaton John Rolfe Chief Wahunsenacawh of the Powhatan, father of Pocahontas

2: What type of colony was Jamestown
The stockholders of the Virginia Company of London financed an English settlement or colony at Jamestown. It was a business venture at first Later it became a royal colony: Virginia

Why go to Jamestown: To make money; discover gold and silver; experience adventure; farm; greater opportunities; or because they were forced to go = indentured servants Why others supported them: In the hopes of financial gain (stock holder) Why didn’t the settlers get along with their neighbors: The Powhaton objected to having their land taken and the settler’s appetite for land was unending Why did Jamestown nearly fail: disease killed many settlers; others were more interested in gold then in hunting and farming; the Powhaton harassed the settlers and killed their livestock

5. Where was Jamestown? When the settlers arrived in 1607, Jamestown was located on a narrow peninsula bordered on three sides by the James River. Today, Jamestown is located on an island in the James River. (North America, Virginia)

6. How? John Smith took over and forced the colonists to work (to eat); tobacco provided the colonists with the money they needed to build the colony

terms Headright system: The Virginia Company’s system in which settlers and the family members who came with them each received 50 acres of land Indentured Servants: Workers who exchanged their labor for help getting started in America Nathanial Bacon: Planter who led a rebellion in 1676 against the governor of the Virginia Colony
