1 Information for parents
Italy 2017 Information for parents

2 Your handout This information sheet will be kept both on the Engine and in paper form in the office and reception. Don’t panic if you lose it!

3 Our itinerary Wed 29th March: Flight out, possible visit to San Clemente church. Thu 30th: Palatine hill, forum, Pantheon, Capitoline Museums and other sites in Rome city centre. Fri 31st: Hadrian’s villa outside Rome, Villa D’Este Roman/Renaissance gardens. Long drive to Sorrento. Sat 1st April: Climb Mt Vesuvius, Herculaneum, Villa Oplontis Sun 2nd : Pompeii, Baia Mon 3rd : Naples Archaeological Museum. Long drive to Rome. Tues 4th: Flight home.

4 Manchester Terminal 3 We will meet at the airport itself, beside the Ryanair check-in desks. 5.15 am is the recommended meeting time. If you are intending to park at the airport and drop your son off, it may be worth visiting the airport one evening or at the weekend to check the driving route, walking route, location of desks.

5 Airport Security No bottles or sharp objects in hand luggage.
No silly jokes. There will probably be no opportunity to shop after going through Airport security.

6 Packed lunch for first day.
The boys will get pretty hungry by the afternoon, after such an early start. We may be able to get something on the move as we walk to the edge of the historic centre and back on the first afternoon, but have no official lunch location booked for the first day. It will be some time before our booked evening meal. They have a tendency to eat everything you give them far too early in the day. Have some UK money for the flights out and return, and Euros for the first day

7 Baggage Ryanair 1 x 15kg checked bag for hold.
1 hand luggage max 55cm x 40cm x 20cm.

8 Spending money As the tour is half-board, they will have to have enough money for lunch each day. Sometimes this will be from snack-bar facilities at the archaeological sites, sometimes this will be for a sit-down meal at a negotiated rate for the group. In the past the sit-down meals have tended to be 10 euros a head, plus drink.

9 EHIC cards Apply NOW if your son still does not have a valid EHIC card. 7 days from website

10 Bank of Flanagan Place an allowance in whole notes for each day in a named envelope. Send the set of envelopes to reception in school. Each morning after breakfast, each boy can queue for today’s envelope. Don’t include first day, but do include last day.

11 Medical Supplies Make sure your son has all the inhalers, tablets and supplements that he requires for the whole trip. One inhaler should be with him, the other with the staff. Although the coach journeys on this trip are mostly fairly short, the long journeys from Rome to Sorrento and back may still cause difficulty if he suffers from car sickness.

12 Passports, EHIC cards, medical supplies and money envelopes.
Send all into reception by Friday before we leave (Fri 24th Mar), to be stored in the school safe, clearly labelled Classics Trip. We will bring them to the airport. They will handed to the boys only when needed, and kept from them for the duration.

13 Phones and cameras We prefer the boys not to communicate with home, unless via the teachers. We need to know about issues as they occur, not several hours or days later. We have not had any theft from the group in any tour I have run. We have however had several phones left on coaches, in hotels or even museums. Any student seen playing or texting on a phone in a museum or archaeological site will forfeit the phone for the trip. Emergency contact: Ring the school first. They will contact us directly. A number for contacting the trip leader direct will be available nearer departure time, using a school mobile.
