I. Background WWII Big Picture:
60 Million people Killed in Europe and Asia In Europe: War was mainly Germany vs. Russia + USA In Asia: twas Japan vs. USA War ends on August, 1945 after Atomic bombs dropped. Only two superpowers left are USA and Russia Russian forces are sprinkled all around Eastern Europe and not leaving.

II. What is the Cold War? A) “Cold” because this war never “heated up” between USA and Russia B) Superpowers sought both ideological and strategic influence around the world C) Goes on from !! More of an Era than a war. D) Associated with: Arms Race - Countries gaining nuclear weapons Space Race - both try to get to Moon Espionage - CIA vs. KGB

III. Belief Systems USA = CAPITALISM RUSSIA/SOVIET UNION = COMMUNISM
-Believes Great Depression occurred because international trade stopped -Nations go to war when there is no international trade-- forced to get resources -World Trade = World Peace -Want our goods purchased abroad RUSSIA/SOVIET UNION = COMMUNISM -Believed Communism > Capitalism -Suspicious of capitalist countries (20m russians killed + USA has atomic weapons) -USSR should encourage communism in other nations.

IV. Conferences World Leaders (Churchill / Stalin / FDR ) would meet during WWII to build post-war world. Important outcomes: 1) United Nations Each country gets 1 vote. The UN Security Council responsible for international peace 2) Yalta Conference S convinces FDR & C that Poland should have Russian controlled Gov. because invaders always come through Poland. Germany + Berlin also divided. West = Allies, E = Russia Declaration of Liberated Europe - allowed people to choose their government of choice 3) Potsdam Conference - (1945 before Hiroshima) - USA hints at Russia ;) about its new Atomic Bombs, bullying them.

V. Iron Curtain Falls After Postdam - Russia feels threatened and installs communist governments in: Poland Romania Bulgaria Hungary Czechoslovakia Russia completely violates declaration of Liberated Europe agreed upon in Yalta. Cold War begins West vs. East Free Capitalism vs. Totalitarian Communism Proxy wars & economic competition on the way!
