GLOBALIS Project Identified Problems of Japan’s Current LIS Education
Public Library: Education for “shisho” or public librarian offered as undergraduate minors does not secure job opportunity =>Many public libraries outsource their services. School Library: Education for “shisho-kyoyu” or teacher librarian as a part of teacher education produces teachers who oversees school libraries as a side job. Academic Library: No qualification system for academic library professionals => Many academic libraries outsource their services. Research Activities: A majority of faculty members who teach professional training courses for “shisho” were library practitioners who did not have formal research training; Few collaboration with overseas researchers. Professional System: JLA does not grapple with professional accreditation, nor collaborate with international counterparts to cope with the globalization of LIS professional systems.
