1 Water, Agri-aquaculture
Inland shore concept: Water retention combined with water level fluctuation as a basis for a revenue model Roel Doef (Rijkswaterstaat), Remco van Ek (Deltares), André Oldenkamp (DeRuimte-Advies), Wouter de Zeeuw (FOM consultants), Rein Kruk (Province Noord-Holland), Karel Bruin Baerts (HH Hollandsnoorderkwartier) 11 april 2018 September 9th 2014

2 Content Inland shore concept? Wieringermeer Building pilots
Concluding remarks 11 april 2018

3 1. Inland shore concept Lake IJssel Many challenges: Water safety
Fresh water supply Water quality objectives Fish stock decline Nature (protection, development) Water recreation (€) Autonomous developments 11 april 2018

4 1. Inland shore concept Flexible water storage with new functions
Inland water storage with significant water level fluctuation Room for water storage to prevent flooding and water scarcity “Water is an opportunity” New sustainable areas for work and living Innovative combinations: water storage, food, nature, recreation, living, working Dynamic landscapes, room for natural processes, CO2 sink Opportunities for WFD, Natura2000, new habitats Opportunities for recreation April 11, 2018

5 1. Inland shore concept Pilot Koopmanspolder: Fish, Nature, Landscape
Source: Kwint van den Berg,

6 1st polder in Lake IJssel (200 km2) Constructed during 1927-1930
2. Wieringermeer Pilot Wieringermeer: Agriculture, Aquaculture, Recreation 1st polder in Lake IJssel (200 km2) Constructed during Land surface ~ 4 m below Lake level Upward seepage, salt load After WW-II: food production Mono-functional: agriculture April 11, 2018

7 2. Wieringermeer Urgency for change? Short term:
Up-scaling: more efficiency, but low job creation Population aging: youth leaves area Regional economy not strong Loss in facilities, decrease in livability Long term: Autonomous developments: water level rise, salt load Climate change: more extreme weather events Globally: water and food becomes more scare

8 3. Building pilots Bottom up approach
Food production is starting point Open process, trust A concept, not fixed ideas Small scale experiments Extend from there

9 3. Building pilots Dike pioneers Sun farming Aqua-test ribbon
Agro-recreation

10 3. Building pilots Climate landscape agriculture – living - economy
Water storage & new economic activities Protected shoreline: econ. activities Open water

12 3. Building pilots Innovation in The Golden triangle
Public authorities Knowledge institutes Ambition Knowledge Budget Shared vision, Linked objectives Deltares Contributes to cases Water system knowledge Monitoring & evaluation Funding activities Private sector

13 3. Building pilots 4 different cases
Mitten crab cultivation Floating crop cultivation Saline crop cultivation Recreational fish ponds

14 20 ha farmland (incl farm) Significant budget
3. Building pilots 20 ha farmland (incl farm) Significant budget First case: ‘Mitten crab’ work in progress April 11, 2018

15 4. Concluding remarks From theory to practice
Link long term vision to short term objectives. A good idea is nice, but you need strong partners for action. Building a good consortium takes time. Storyline must be simple and easy to understand. Invest in PR and communication. Think in opportunities, not in problems. April 11, 2018
