ASTM define it as; "process of joining materials to make objects from 3D model data, usually layer upon layer, as opposed to subtractive manufacturing methodologies, such as traditional machining.” There are many different names used for this technology. We use Additive Layer Manufacture (ALM) but it is also know as additive manufacturing, freeform fabrication, rapid prototyping, 3D printing.... Categories within Additive Manufacturing include powder bed fusion, direct energy deposition, material jetting, binder jetting, material extrusion, vat Photopolymerisation and sheet lamination.
