How might you observe and record the weather?
3
Lesson Objectives Know different ways to measure the weather.
Be able to explain how these instruments work and the results we would collect from them. Justify where to place a weather station.
4
How can we record the weather?
Think about how we can record the weather (2mins)
5
Objective 4 – How is the weather measured?
We will look at 6 pictures or instruments Look at the instrument or picture that you have been given. As a group try to work out… What is it? What does it measure? Write down your ideas in the back of your book.
12
Precipitation Moisture falling from the sky Includes rain, snow, sleet
Measured with a rain gauge. Units: Millimetres
13
Temperature How hot or cold it is. Measured with a thermometer.
Units Degrees Centigrade/Celsius
14
Some instruments will measure both Temperature and light level!
Thermometer Light meter How do you use it? Take 3 readings of light and temperature at each site and take the average result. Considerations Cloud cover can change quite quickly, affecting the light results at each site. Holding thermometer in direct sunlight can affect results!
15
Air Pressure The weight of the air. Measured with a barometer.
Units Millibars.
16
Wind Direction Where the wind is blowing FROM.
A North West wind is blowing FROM the North West. Measured with a wind vane. Recorded as a compass point direction. Benefits/problems? Weakness? Improvement?
17
Wind speed How fast the wind is blowing. Measured with an Anemometer.
Units Kilometers per hour (KPH) Weakness? Improvement?
18
Wind direction Wind vane the arrow points into the wind This wind has come from the north. It is a northerly wind. The wind is always named after the direction it has come from.
19
Wind Speed Anemometer Be careful!
Very high or low wind speeds can be difficult to measure. Wind strength is hard to measure at ground level (things like buildings can block or funnel the wind). Improvement Taking several readings and finding an average can make results more accurate.
20
Cloud Cover How much of the sky is covered in clouds.
Measured by looking at the sky with your eyes and estimating how many eighths (1/8ths) of the sky is covered in cloud. Units Oktas Or by using satellite images
21
Visibility How far you can see clearly.
Measured with a visibility meter Units Meters or Kilometers
23
Weather stations record all this information for meteorologists to use.
24
Describing the weather…
Using the information below describe the temperature for Ibstock over the week. (4 marks)
25
Where to put a weather station?
Wind direction – North Westerly wind. C D B Choose a weather station and say why… (6 marks) A
