2 About GBHEM The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry serves as the leadership development agency of The United Methodist Church. Established as the Board of Education in 1866 Today, GBHEM leads and connects the educational and ministerial life of our global church. Today we proudly invest in and support a network of: 119 nationally recognized United Methodist-related schools, colleges, and universities 11 Historically Black Colleges and Universities More than 1,000 educational institutions in the Methodist tradition globally Higher Education is a significant part of our Wesleyan heritage GBHEM represents the UMC in its relationships with educational institutions and campus ministry Develops policy and practice that enables the UMC to engage effectively in higher education throughout the world Advisory and consultative relationship to all United Methodist-affiliated institutions Universities Colleges Secondary and special schools Wesley Foundations and similar organizations Campus ministry groups

We offer students financial support through loans and scholarships to help them reach their educational goals (a hand up, not a hand out). More than $5 million per year in loans and scholarships through 70+ programs Special Sunday giving is vital to keeping funds available to students Awards are funded by Special Sunday offerings, endowments, gifts and annuities invested by the GBHEM Finance Committee Loans and Scholarships receives no apportionment or World Service funds for operations Oldest loan fund in the country (Est. in 1866 as Children’s Education Fund) Purpose has always been to create a means for students to assist themselves in paying for their education with affordable loans (a hand up not a hand out). Special Sundays that support L&S: Student Day, World Communion, Native American Sunday L&S turns down an average 1,000 eligible students per year for scholarships due to lack of funding.

Undergraduate, graduate, and some doctoral Pursuing any career (not just for seminarians or persons pursuing ordination) Enrolled at any accredited institution (not just United Methodist schools) Apply January 3 - March 1 for Fall Scholarship awards: LOANS Low interest repayment options with interest rates well below federal student loans Apply year-round with a credit worthy cosigner for a loan up to $5,000 per calendar year: Loan Fund requires a cosigner and offers low interest repayment options “Borrow Smart” loan has an interest rate of 3.75%, well below the interest rate of federal student loans
