1 Presentation On Potentiality of Wind Power Generation in Bangladesh
Presentation On Potentiality of Wind Power Generation in Bangladesh ICMEAS 2017 Paper No- 200 Presented By: K M Azam Chowdhury, Former Assistant Professor, BSMR Maritime University, Mirpur, Dhaka & Lieutenant Commander BN ,

2 STUDY AREA

3 INTRODUCTION Wind power has been defined as the conversion of wind energy. Approximately 51% of Bangladesh’s population particularly in the off grid areas. In Bangladesh, power generation is mostly dependent on natural gas, around % of electricity is being produced from our gas reserve.

4 AIM The aim of this paper is to analyze the measured values of wind speed and estimate the possible power generation through installation of near shore and offshore wind farm.

5 SCOPE Material and Methods Global perspective Bangladesh Perspective
Result and Discussion Conclusion Recommendations

6 MATERIAL AND METHODS Different papers are reviewed to summarize the related information. Daily wind speed data (0-10 m average) is calculated from u and v component of wind are extracted.

7 GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE USA was the 1st, Germany 2nd and India 3rd in the world (2008). But China become Top at the end of 2014.

8 GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE CONT..
Global annual installed wind capacity is showed, whereas it was highest 63,467 MW

9 GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE CONT…

10 BANGLADESH PERSPECTIVE
Numerous diminutive islands and 724 km long coast line. Brawny south- westerly steady wind, calm north-easterly trade wind. The annual average wind speed at 30 m height is more than 5m/s.

11 BD PERSPECTIVE CONT. Some measurements were made by F. Rahman followed by a year’s measurement in Patenga. This led to a year-long systematic wind speed study at seven coastal sites in The maximum velocity obtained at Saint Martins is 20 m/s and yearly average wind speed in 4.6 m/s. The maximum velocity obtained at Teknaf is 16 m/s and yearly average wind speed in 3.8 m/s.

12 BD PERSPECTIVE CONT. Bangladesh’s first-ever generation of electricity from wind at a 900- kilowatt plant. The power plant have four separate wind turbines of 225 kw each. Beside several small wind generators have been installed by BRAC and Grameen Shakti. Wind resources on Kutubdia Island

13 BD PERSPECTIVE CONT. The cost to generate one kilowatt hour of power (kWh) from wind energy to be about half the cost of an equivalent unit of power from solar energy. The expansion of the potential of wind energy will be crucial. Bangladesh has a projected electricity demand of MW.

14 BD PERSPECTIVE CONT. Despite having huge coastline and relatively large area only 100 MW from wind power sources. Bulk of this generation is planned to be deployed in the coastal area and adjacent islands. Bangladesh Power development board (BPDB) implemented a 1000kW capacity on the kutubdia island (hybrid wind-disel power plant). Video clip

15 BD PERSPECTIVE CONT. Electricity from wind in the coastal areas can be transmitted to other regions of the country. Lack of information about wind energy and accessing past data from reliable and reputable sources. Lack of systematic monitoring and evaluation along with inadequate experience. Weak regulatory incentives have been unsuccessful in encouraging private sector.

16 Time series of wind speed from 1990-2016 years
RESULT AND DISCUSSION Time series of wind speed from years Yearly wind speed Smoothing by 30 days

17 RESULT AND DISCUSSION CONT..
Monthly Climatology of wind speed from years

18 RESULT AND DISCUSSION CONT..
Climatology of (0-10 meters average) surface wind speed from years

19 RESULT AND DISCUSSION CONT..
Wind speed more than 3.2 ms-1 permanently exist from the month of April to August whereas other month it is low. Peaks during June-August month of each year. Offshore wind speed is always high during April- August month, other months also show higher offshore wind. Thus, Offshore wind power mill will be very effective for Bangladesh. Coastal wind mill also can be fruitful to generate power during the month of April-August.

20 CONCLUSIONS Wind- high quality, clean and environment friendly energy services. Wind turbines take up less space than the average power station. Extensive study on wind power stations feasibility should be done in different parts of Bangladesh Govt. should arrange funding to setup wind measuring stations and wind mapping project.

21 RECOMENDATIONS Extensive study on wind power stations feasibility should be done in different parts of Bangladesh at height meters. Offshore as well as Coastal both types of wind power mill can be set. Small and large both types of turbine can be installed as per wind speed strength.
