Answer the following question in the “Think About It” When Miss Hinze releases the balloon, what shows you that it is moving?

Speed and Velocity Chapter 19 Section 1
Motion Speed and Velocity Chapter 19 Section 1 Standard: SPI Apply proper equations to solve basic problems pertaining to distance, time, speed, and velocity
3
Motion & Speed CLIP Motion A change in position in relation to some fixed object. Fixed objects used to determine relative motion are called reference points.
5
Speed Speed describes how quickly a person or object changes position.
Speed is determined by the following formula:
6
Speed Graphs In what time period is the bass boat speeding up?
In what time period is the bass boat slowing down? When is the speed NOT changing?
7
Graphing Speed Speed is usually graphed using a line graph, and it depicts the distance and time. Time is the independent variable, and thus is ALWAYS on the x-axis. Distance is the dependent variable, and is ALWAYS on the y-axis.
8
Average Speed The total distance traveled divided by the time it takes to travel the distance. Formula: Instantaneous speed = how fast an object is moving at any given moment. Constant speed = same speed over time.
9
Let’s Do An Example Together! Show your work!
10
Show your work? What does that mean?!
Write out the formula Fill in the formula with your information Solve the formula Write the answer Write the proper label Circle or highlight your answer so it is visible
11
Average Speed What is the AVERAGE speed of the bass boat depicted in the graph?
12
Average speed is taking the total distance traveled (0 to 125 meters), and dividing by the total time (1 to 9 seconds) it takes. Average Speed = 125 meters = 13.9 m/s 9 seconds
13
Instantaneous Speed What is the instantaneous speed of the bass boat at t=7 seconds?
14
Instantaneous speed is speed at any given point in time
Instantaneous speed is speed at any given point in time. At 7 seconds, the distance is 85 meters; therefore we divide to find the speed Instantaneous Speed = 85 meters = 12.1 m/s 7 seconds
15
Velocity & Acceleration
Velocity = speed in a given direction. Acceleration = the rate in change of the velocity
16
Acceleration Acceleration is determined by the following formula:
Vf = Final Velocity Vi = Initial Velocity
17
Circular Motion Centripetal acceleration occurs as an object traveling in a circular motion is always changing direction and therefore velocity and accelerating.
18
DO!! 933 feet = = 93.3 ft /s 10 seconds 20 meters = = 1.3 m / s
27 km = = .95 km / min 28.5 minutes 65 miles = 43.3 mph = 1.5 hours
