Sweet Jellybean Graphing

Goals and Objectives SWBAT identify same and different by the attribute of color. SWBAT sort objects by one attribute such as color. SWBAT make and read a real graph. SWBAT input data collected into an Excel spreadsheet. SWBAT create a graph in Excel using their data with adult support.

Standards Mathematical Practice:
CCCS K.MD.B.3 Classify objects into given categories; count the number of objects in each category and sort the categories by count. Technology: NJCCCS A.5 Enter information into a spreadsheet and sort the information.

Activities Objectives: SWBAT identify same and different by the attribute of color. SWBAT sort objects by one attribute such as color. SWBAT make and read a real graph. SWBAT input data collected into an Excel spreadsheet. SWBAT create a graph in Excel using their data with adult support. Procedure: (Day One) Students will each receive a plastic Easter egg filled with jellybeans. Students will sort the jellybeans on the sorting mat. Students will record their data onto the jellybean graph. (Day 2) Students will enter their data onto a shared Excel spreadsheet that will be created by the teacher. Students will use their data to create a graph in Excel with adult support. Materials: Easter egg filled with jellybeans, sorting mat, jellybean graph, crayons, pencils, computer, and Excel spreadsheet

Examples Use of the Fill Series feature to number students
View different portions of the worksheet at once using the split screen feature

More Examples Create formula’s by using Excel’s built-in functions (Sum, Min, Max, and Range) Conditional Formatting to highlight a total of 5 or greater of a color or a total of less than 1 of a color

More Examples Graphs Graphs can be created to compare individual data, small group data, or whole group data. These graphs can be used to compare how many jelly beans each student received of each color. Students can look to see which color had the most, least, and if any color had the same amount.
