It’s All About Energy!!! Energy flows, changes form, & is stored within ALL living things. The ultimate source of energy for our planet and all living organisms is the sun. All living things need food for energy. Solar energy helps plants make “food”, then animals can eat the plants (or other plant-eating animals) for “food”. Food provides the chemical energy (ATP) and the molecules required for growth, tissue repair, all cell functions and life functions for the survival of all organisms. Without energy, there is no life!
3
NOW Let’s create a simple foldable explaining how this energy is made. It will contain: The chemical equations for photosynthesis and cellular respiration. A well-worded explanation of each process (what, where, why) A comparison of the two processes. A drawing that shows the interaction of the two processes. A few questions analyzing the two processes. ***Relax about this foldable. It is nowhere near the depth of your flipbook. But it will count for a grade.
4
Making the foldable… Fold a sheet of paper in half hot-dog style to make a crease down the middle. Unfold. Then, fold the two long edges in toward the crease (shutter-style…2 flaps)

Write this on the top, left flap of your foldable.
Photosynthesis During photosynthesis, plants capture energy from the sun in their chloroplasts. In the chloroplasts, the light energy is used to change H2O and CO2 into glucose, the plant’s food. Oxygen is given off as a waste product. Glucose provides a chemical energy for the plant to grow. Write this on the top, left flap of your foldable.
9
Now, let’s look at molecular processes in living things.
Let’s watch an animation of what takes place during photosynthesis.
10
Write this on the bottom, left flap of your foldable.
Cellular Respiration Animals eat plants and plant-eating animals. This is how animals get glucose. During cellular respiration, animal cells require oxygen to change glucose into ATP energy. This takes place in a cell’s mitochondria. This energy is needed for the animal’s functions and growth CO2 and H2O are given off as by-products and go back into the air and soil. Write this on the bottom, left flap of your foldable.

Chemical equation for Photosynthesis:
6CO2 + 6H2O + Light Energy C6H12O6 + 6O2 Write these on the inside of your foldable. Chemical equation for Cellular Respiration: C6H12O6 + 6O CO2 + 6H2O + ATP Energy

Let’s watch a Brainpop about cellular respiration.

On the back, right half, answer the following questions in COMPLETE SENTENCES using the drawing and information in the book pp Define ATP. Where in the cell is ATP created? What is the importance of ATP for living organisms? What is the importance of oxygen in making ATP? How do plants and animals recycle materials? On the back, left half of the foldable: draw, label and color Fig. 3 from p.534, including explanations.
