22 Drug Misuse The incorrect use of a prescription or OTC drug Examples:
using someone else’s prescription Taking the wrong dosage Taking a drug too often

23 Drug Abuse The intentional use of a drug without medical or health reasons Examples: Taking illegal drugs Drinking cough syrup to feel buzzed

24 5 ways drugs can enter your body
1. By mouth swallowing a pill capsule, or liquid Travels to the stomach and small intestine, then is absorbed into the blood stream

2. By injection Using a syringe and a needle Must be dissolved in a liquid Goes directly under the skin into a muscle or blood vessel

3. By inhalation Through the nose or mouth Enters the bloodstream quickly through the lungs

4. By implantation Surgically implanted or placed under the skin, where they are released into the blood stream

30 Prescription drug A medicine that fights a specific illness or infection and can be obtained only with a written order from a licensed health professional

Two drugs are the same and produce the same effects

32 Over the Counter Drug (OTC)
A drug that can be purchased without a prescription at drug stores or grocery stores

33 Indication for use The symptom or condition for which an OTC drug should be used

34 Side Effect An unwanted body change that is not related to the main purpose of the drug

40 Smashed video – 50 minutes
The video is a documentary filmed at a Trauma Center in Maryland and shows the true story of several teens that were involved in accidents that involved alcohol Some scenes are graphic. Feel free to turn your head if you need to.
