Maximize Class time and Bridge Learning Gaps with Just-In-Time-Teaching
Rachel Glazener, Assistant Professor Natural and Behavioral Sciences Pellissippi State Community College
2
Prior to course redesign: Class Structure
Lecture: The instructor defined concepts, highlighted difficult topics, and worked approximately 2 practice problems per topic Homework: End of Chapter Problems and Instructor Created Practice Problems Grading: 5 in-class exams, 1 final exam, lab grade
3
Prior to course redesign: Course issues
Lecture: No feedback from students. Variety of student body and learning styles. Sit and learn style lecture. Students struggle primarily with “difficult topics” Hard pressed to cover 11 ½ chapters of material in allotted time. Homework: Feedback from assignment(s) took several days. Students tend to study what they are “comfortable” with
4
Utilizing just in time teaching
What JiTT is: What JiTT is NOT: Students being prepared Strengthening communication Closing the feedback loop Increasing ownership of learning Computer graded homework or technology Delivering content via the web Replacing the instructor with online materials
5
Utilizing just in time teaching
Students learn base material BEFORE coming to class Instructor uses results of base material assignments to shape that day’s class lesson Students become active learners and take a deeper dive with the material in class

importance and order performed
Learning Personalized Low Stakes Lecture What is important to learn? Assessment What have you learned? High Stakes

Course jitt design ideas
Scenario #1 Scenario #2 Assign out of class reading Give students a short assignment to gauge gained knowledge Focus on low scoring topics in class Take a deeper dive into the higher scoring topics in class Complete an in-class lecture Assign an out of class assignment to gauge gained knowledge Have students reflect on missed concepts Take a deeper dive and expand on prior knowledge

Additional Ideas on how to present this
Idea 1: Use a padlet to deliver sections of reading, add guiding questions for students to answer, add a google/onedrive form to gauge students knowledge
18
Additional Ideas on how to present this
Idea 2: Use Nearpod to deliver “lecture packets”, present slides of notes, add in videos/websites with support information, and add interactive questions to gauge student knowledge.

Additional Ideas on how to present this
Idea 3: Use OneNote Class notebooks to deliver “lecture packets”, type up a brief outline of the lecture note, add guiding questions for students to fill in, and add a form at the end to gauge students knowledge.

Student opinions: The Good
“Helps me keep track of what I should be learning that week and be prepared for class. You’re lost in class if you didn’t do the reading.” “The Learnsmart helps to give some basic information, that is explained in more detail in lecture. The homework was very similar to the exam. The online book is a little tedious to navigate but very helpful.” “I realized about half way through how much easier the course was once I started taking LearnSmart seriously. Taking notes while reading really helps.” “I usually never buy the book and I definitely wouldn’t read it. With this I read the material and it actually helped”
22
Student opinions: The not so Good
“I have a hard time with technology, but I know that is the way the world is headed.” “Due date for reading chapter in learn smart should be extended until the chapter is completed.” “Just have a list of information we need to know rather than having a lot of text to read.” “LearnSmart questions can be very confusing, especially the "Check All That Apply." Very time consuming but it does help.”
23
After course redesign: Class Structure
Lecture: The instructor minimally lectures and will only lecture on difficult topics. Instructor helps facilitate practice problems and answers questions. Students actively practice problems selected to strengthen their weaknesses and receives live instructor feedback. Homework: pre-reading assignments with LearnSmart, Connect Homework assignments, both giving students instant feedback. 4 Exams, LearnSmart grade, Connect Homework grade, lab, and a Final Exam
