1 Biology w/ earth systems Chapter 13: Explore Part 1
In the “Warm-Up” section of your journal write today’s date and answer the following question: How does the fact that Black Diamond sits on coal provide evidence of tectonic plate movement? Hint: Coal forms in tropical environments

2 Pick up your safety contract
Cut out the rules of the Safety Contract and tape them inside the front cover of your journal (you may fold them in half if you are using a composition notebook). You will only need 4 small pieces of tape to accomplish this task.

3 Explore: Scaling Up to Mountainous Change Part 1
Learning Targets: I can explain how slow movements can result in significant change to the Earth’s features. I can determine the rate at which tectonic plates move.

4 Read pages 650 to 653 for directions to the activity
Read pages 650 to 653 for directions to the activity. As a team decide on the following roles, a. Number cruncher b. Developer who will cut out the plates etc. c. Pace keeper, makes sure your plates move at the correct rate. D. Data and records keeper.

5 Tools you will need today:
Meter Stick Timer: Use the team station laptop and go to Paper plate with animal Scissors and masking tape Calculator (you may use your phone)

6 Complete the lab sheet with your team
1. Make sure to read the procedure carefully on pages Work with your teammates to accomplish the necessary tasks. 3. If you are comfortable with calculating ratios you can continue on with the lab activity, if you are not I will be assisting the class with question 5c.
