National Paediatric Diabetes Audit
The National Paediatric Diabetes Audit (NPDA) was established to compare the care and outcomes of all children and young people with diabetes receiving care from Paediatric Diabetes Units (PDUs) in England and Wales. The audit is commissioned by the Health Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP), funded by NHS England and the Welsh Government, and is managed by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. It has been reporting since 2003. NPDA scope The 2015/16 NPDA included all 173 Paediatric Diabetes Units (PDUs) in England and Wales, and captured information on 28,439 children and young people up to the age of 24 Young people undergoing transition should have their data submitted for as long as they remain under the care of a paediatrician Data is submitted from every single patient visit during the audit year, via csv upload or individual questionnaire entry So far, the audit has been a retrospective annual audit, collecting data from the year between 1st April and the 31st March The NPDA also offers Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PREMS) for patients and parents and receives data from the Hospital and Episode Statistics (HES) and PEDW databases about diabetes-related hospital admissions of children and young people within the audit. NPDA aims Monitor the incidence and prevalence of all types of diabetes amongst children and young people receiving care from a PDU in England and Wales Establish the extent to which key care processes are being received by children and young people with diabetes Enable benchmarking of performance against standards of care specified by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance at PDU and national level Monitor national progress towards improved diabetes control Determine the prevalence and incidence of diabetes-related complications amongst children and young people with diabetes Themed slide 1 Along with the first 3 mandatory slides: a min of one themed slide should be selected Further slides specific to the presentation subject can be created under each themed slide chosen

How is data colleated and submitted?
Themed slide 1 Along with the first 3 mandatory slides: a min of one themed slide should be selected Further slides specific to the presentation subject can be created under each themed slide chosen
6
What do we do with your data?
Cleaning and analysis Core national report: Care processes and outcomes Unit, regional, CCG and country breakdown of results Outlier identification and notification Hospital Admissions report combining unit submitted data and data from the HES/PEDW databases Patient Reported Experience Measure (PREMs) reports Themed slide 1 Along with the first 3 mandatory slides: a min of one themed slide should be selected Further slides specific to the presentation subject can be created under each themed slide chosen
7
How does the data get used?
Unit level data becomes publically available following publication of the national report and is used for: Internal review Communication of outlier status to units, medical directors and CEOs Best Practice Tariff in England Network review CQC dashboards to aid CQC inspections Plans for a quality measure on NHS choices Assessing performance of regions and CCGs Themed slide 1 Along with the first 3 mandatory slides: a min of one themed slide should be selected Further slides specific to the presentation subject can be created under each themed slide chosen

Next steps Moving from a retrospective annual audit to prospective data collection and immediate feedback Spotlight audits: Workforce, pump usage outcomes in conjunction with the NDA Quality Improvement Collaborative based on Swedish model using NPDA data PREM redevelopment and international dissemination with research partners Themed slide 1 Along with the first 3 mandatory slides: a min of one themed slide should be selected Further slides specific to the presentation subject can be created under each themed slide chosen

NPDA Results online This year we launched our new reporting tool, NPDA Online The tool was developed to facilitate benchmarking of unit, regional and regional performance Every year, more data will be added to help units track their progress over time The link is available through the front page of our website: Themed slide 1 Along with the first 3 mandatory slides: a min of one themed slide should be selected Further slides specific to the presentation subject can be created under each themed slide chosen
11
Data Completeness Reports
The data completeness report is a feature of the data capture system that enables units to identify gaps and inaccuracies in their submission such as Missing columns Incorrectly coded data (e.g. treatment regimen) Missing demographic information It provides an early look at results of care process completion measures and HbA1c outcomes The clinical lead should view the data completeness report following final submission of data to assure themselves that the data is complete and accurate before signing off the data. 12
Using the Query Builder
This tool helps you to interrogate the data that has been submitted by your units and is a brand new feature of the system You can create groups of patients meeting certain criteria, and generate exports of those groups for further analysis/scrutiny locally The query builder provided is version 1 – we intend to develop its usability further and provide user guidance next week Should complement the DCR in terms of assessing accuracy and completeness of data Themed slide 1 Along with the first 3 mandatory slides: a min of one themed slide should be selected Further slides specific to the presentation subject can be created under each themed slide chosen

Common queries during submission (so far)
Why hasn’t my password been sent to me after registering? You need to ensure with your IT departments that messages sent from are set to be accepted otherwise you won’t get automatically generated messages from the system. How can I extract my data? Your system will need extraction software (7 Zip, Winzip, Winrar) installed for you to be able to use this feature. You can then do so by selecting ‘Data Extraction’ from the tabs on the home page and setting up your own password.
14
Typical Queries during Submission
Can I submit data for multiple units? We can set up access to multiple unit access. Data from each individual unit are stored separately and will only be viewable by used listed against each one. Why cant I view the Data Completeness Report for my submitted data? When you submit data using the CSV method, the filename needs to start with your PZ code i.e. ‘PZ008’ otherwise the DCR will not populate.
15
Typical Queries during Submission
Which browser does the system work best in ? We have found that the Data Capture system works best in the latest version of Google Chrome. It still works wellwith IE11 and all other browsers that we’ve tested it with. How can I download the Data Quality Report and Error List? The error list is generated upon submission. The DQR can be downloaded following submission, and after this it is available from the ‘Data Extraction’ tab.
16
Typical Queries during Submission
Data is missing from my Twinkle/Diamond/Bespoke system extraction, can you help? Only by providing you with the DCR/DQR to highlight errors. We recommend uploading your data well in advance of the deadline to help you identify and amend any errors in your extraction. To resolve any extraction issues, please discuss with your colleagues and contact your system provider.
17
Top tips wanted! Group exercise: How do delegates successfully collect and submit accurate, complete data to the NPDA? You may consider: System configuration and training Data entry throughout the year Extraction Obtaining clinical lead approval and sign off
