Describe your own development as a college student, from undergraduate to graduate. What factors influenced your decision and determination to attend and complete college? How different were you at different stages in your collegiate life? Select major points in your time line and describe how they influenced your life and career choices.

1967 – Began elementary school in Marietta, integrated already, though surrounding Cobb County schools were not. 1972 – Began middle school in inaugural year of Garrett Middle School. Firsts: concept of common areas, pods, color-coded groups, integrated classrooms. Attended with students acculturated to junior-high, segregated classes. – Began high school, heavy involvement in band, competitive color guard/dance, and (outside school) competitive drum and bugle corps. Began dating. Upon graduation, awarded Humanities scholarship to Kennesaw College. 1979-Jan – enrolled and dropped out after first semester at Kennesaw. Parents separated. moved out, worked, moved back home after a year. Parents divorced. Enrolled at Ga. State, returned to competitive drum & bugle corps. Dropped out of Ga. State.

; dropped out of Ga. State, applied/accepted to Shorter College Rome, moved into dorms, dropped out at end of Fall semester. Moved back home, re-enrolled at Ga. State. : married, daughters born, tried to re-enroll, had to take a hardship withdrawal failing to balance marriage, motherhood and pursuit of degree. : saw ad for Shorter College working adult program in Creative Loafing, cohort format fit needs, arranged childcare around predictable class schedule and finished bachelor’s degree. : career change, working for higher ed consulting firm supporting Shorter College, enrolled in graduate degree, cohort model format to finish in same way as bachelor’s degree. : completed doctorate; became a grandmother and adjunct faculty.
