10. Grades and Credits Grades and Credits
Passing grades = “A, B, C or D”
“D” grades do not count for college admission
Students receive 5.0 credits per semester class when the class is passed
“F” grades = 0.0 credits
If you fail a required course such as Language Arts, math or history, you must make it up in summer school or through an Adult Education class (night school).

11. Freshman Grades Matter!
GPA Calculation: A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0
Grades with a + or – do not have different point values.
To calculate the GPA, assign each grade a numerical value, add the values and divide by the number of classes in that semester.
SVUSD Weighted GPA: Honors, AP and some IB courses are given weight (bonus points)

12. Honors vs. AP vs. IB An Honors Course …
Moves faster and goes into greater depth.
An AP (Advanced Placement) Course …
Is a college level class that culminates with an exam in May that can earn college credit. AP tests are given primarily in gr except for AP Human Geography.
An IB Course …
Is a college level course that has internal assessment and an exam in May. Students in the IB program take Honors or AP coursework in Grades 9 and 10.
*IB Diploma courses and testing only occurs in Grades 11 & 12.

Be productive – make the most of class time
Study every night – reserve a block of time and use it
Daily tutorial period
Tutor resources at school
NHS and CSF students
Before/after school tutoring in library…be on lookout for info
Get involved in something you like at school
Club, athletics, musical, play, yearbook, leadership, etc.
Be organized
Planner – Keep track of class assignments
Complete all classwork and homework and TURN IT IN!
Use a notebook or notebook section for each subject
Clean out your backpack every night

19. Students with Involved Parents are More Likely to:
Earn higher grades and test scores, and enroll in higher-level programs
Be promoted, pass their classes, and earn credits
Have better social skills, show improved behavior, and adapt well to school.
