Objectives: Chemical Bonding: 3.24.17 Chemical Bonding Exam
I can name and establish the formula of ionic compounds.
2
Chemical Nomenclature
Nomenclature= naming compounds.
3
Naming Ionic Compounds
4
Types of Ions Monatomic Ions : 1 element makes-up the ion.
Polyatomic Ions: 2 or more elements make-up an ion.
5
Naming Cations: Monatomic ions
They are the metal ions. Metals with a fixed charge Name of metal Metals with multiple charges Name of metal and roman numeral to identify what charge is being used in that example.
6
Naming Cations: Polyatomic ion
Responsible for only one polyatomic cation. NH41+ = ammonium ion, fixed charge
7

Chemical Bonding: Due: Ionic Compound Packet Objectives: I can name and establish the formula of ionic compounds.
8
Naming Anions: Monatomic ions
They are non-metal ions. ALL non-metal ions have a fixed charge when they become stable. The root of the non-metal with –ide ending.
9
Naming Anions: Polyatomic ions
Most of your polyatomic ions are anions Simply the name of the polyatomic anion Charges for polyatomic ions are fixed
10
Naming Ionic Compounds (Cation and Anion)
KF : potassium fluoride Ca3P2 : calcium phosphide CuBr2 : copper (II) bromide FeN : iron (III) nitride
11
Naming Ionic Compounds
BaCl2:barium chloride Mn3P2: manganese (III) phosphide Ag2O: silver oxide CaBr2: calcium bromide
12
Determine the Chemical Formula
Aluminum Phosphide: Al2P3 2. Magnesium Chloride: MgCl2 3. Iron (III) Sulfide: Fe2S3 4. Chromium (II) Oxide: CrO 5. Nickel (II) Bromide: NiBr2
13
Chemical Formula of Ionic Compounds
Write the symbol and charge for the cation and the anion. If charges balance, then the ions are one to one in the formula. If charges do not balance, then use the criss-cross method to establish the correct ratio of ions (subscripts) so they do balance out in the formula.
14
Ionic Compounds Nomenclature Review
Bond between a cation and an anion. Usually the cation is a metal ion, exception NH41+ Include roman numeral if metal can form multiple charges. The anion can either be a non-metal ion or a polyatomic ion. Non-metal ions will have –ide ending. Polyatomic anions usually end in –ate or –ite Exception: OH1- = hydroxide Overall charge on an ionic compound is ALWAYS zero! So, ionic compounds are neutral.

Covalent Compounds Covalent compounds = molecules
When naming covalent compounds prefixes are used. Prefixes: Mon(o)=1 atom Hexa = 6 atoms Di= 2 atoms Hepta= 7 atoms Tri= 3 atoms Octa= 8 atoms Tetra= 4 atoms Nona= 9 atoms Penta= 5 atoms Deca= 10 atoms

Naming Chemical Compounds
Name the following molecules. HF NH3 O2 2. Determine the molecular formula of the following: dihydrogen monosulfide dinitrogen trioxide bromine
22
Diatomic Molecules Two atoms of the same element bonded together.
Name of the element. Diatomic Molecules:

Covalent Compound Nomenclature Review
A covalent compound is also called a molecule. Consists only of non-metals. Only responsible for interpreting covalent compounds consisting of two non-metals. Use prefixes to identify quantity of atoms for each non-metal in the compound. First non-metal, just name of non-metal. Do not include a prefix IF there is only one of them (no subscript). Second non-metal, base of non-metal with –ide ending. ALWAYS include a prefix.
