Homework Policy copied daily into assignment pad
can be viewed on class webpage, homework board is checked but not graded allows for independent practice of skills taught in school Do NOT spend more than an hour on homework Please refer to the ABC’s of 3 A’s Classroom Routines and Procedures for a complete list of class/school policy.

Classroom Expectations
Be prepared (sneakers, homework, lunch, etc.) Be respectful Be focused Be a bucket filler Ask for help Positive Behavior Management (rewards)

Friday Folder All tests, graded assignments, and important papers will go home on Friday. Please review all the papers and tests. Return the folder with the signed Friday folder log on Monday.

Surfer of the Week Each student will have the opportunity to be our “Surfer of the Week.” This is a chance to share things about our family and the things that are important to us. To prepare for this, I will ask each to student to write, draw, or bring in pictures about themselves. I also invite a parent or relative of the Surfer to come in and read a favorite story to the class. Please see the handout in the folder for suggestions about what to bring in and the week your child will be the Surfer.

Reading Workshop At Home
Independent reading of “just right” books for 15 minutes, building up to 30 minutes, please see the reference sheet in your folder Reading log in reading folder Reading responses to be done in the Notebook Reading Folder and Notebook go home EVERY NIGHT and come back EVERY DAY

Writing Workshop collecting ideas drafting revising editing publishing
Handwriting – Third Graders will be learning cursive. Please see the handout in your folder.

Word Study Students were assessed and assigned a word study group
Words will be assigned biweekly Words are sorted based on patterns or meaning Lists are introduced on Monday in small groups Homework Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday Collected and checked on Friday Test every other Friday

Word Estimates Read Alouds are selected based on the unit theme
Reading level of read alouds is often above the independent reading level Vocabulary words are identified by the teacher ahead of time Students practice reading the word and then estimate its meaning during the read aloud Students look up the dictionary definition and part of speech AFTER reading is complete Students learn to use the word in a meaningful sentence Vocabulary is reviewed daily Students will be assessed with a vocabulary test every other week

Tests and Quizzes Projects This is the year when students need to begin to STUDY for tests Tests and quizzes are given to inform instruction.

Report Cards 4 = Exceeding Learning Standards: Student performance demonstrates an understanding of the knowledge and skills beyond expectations and consistently shows evidence of higher level thinking. 3 = Meeting Learning Standards: Student performance demonstrates a thorough understanding of the knowledge and skills expected at this grade level. 2 = Approaching Learning Standards: Student performance demonstrates a partial understanding of the knowledge and skills expected at this grade level. 1 = Not Meeting Learning Standards: Student performance does not demonstrate an understanding of the knowledge and skills expected at this grade level. Subject Area has a letter grade, skills have 1-4 rating 4 quarters, progress reports in the middle of the marking period go home if students are not meeting expectations
