Introduction to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®)
Bruce Gibson
2
Brief history of the MBTI assessment
Carl Jung was a turn-of-the-century Swedish psychiatrist. Found consistent trends in the way people experience and become aware of the world around them (called perception) and how people draw conclusions about what they perceived (called judgment).
3
Brief history of the MBTI assessment
In the 1920’s, the mother-daughter team of Katharine Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers expanded upon Jung’s work on personality type. Over the next 40 years, Myers and Briggs focused on people’s personality types and work and produced an assessment based on Jung’s theory that measures preferences along four type dichotomies and 16 distinct types.

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®)
Since the assessment’s first introduction, it has undergone professional scrutiny and improvements as both a reliable and valid indicator of personality preferences. Used by Fortune 100 companies and top universities worldwide for career development and to maximize individual and team effectiveness from entry to executive levels.

Psychological Type and the Dichotomies
High level concept of the four dichotomies. The E-I dichotomy focuses on where you prefer to focus your attention and where you get energy. The S-N dichotomy focuses on how you prefer to take in information. The T-F dichotomy focuses on how you make decisions. The J-P dichotomy focuses on how you deal with the outer world. The S-N dichotomy and the T-F dichotomy are called “functions” and are at the heart of our preferences. Explain the relationship between the two functions: how the S-N dichotomy focuses on how we take in information, and then how the T-F dichotomy focuses on how we make decisions based on the information we took in. Be amazed at the concept of different people having their own preferred lenses on both how they see the world and how they interpret what the see. After each dichotomy on the following slides, asked client to share his or her thoughts and talk about how he or she displays both characteristics. This is a great opportunity for him or her to share experiences at work and at home when he or she uses type preferences.
7
Psychological Type and the Dichotomies
Is your natural focus the external world or the internal world?
8
Psychological Type and the Dichotomies
For the S-N dichotomy, use the orange exercise, asking client to describe a pretend orange in his or her hand. This is a great exercise to illustrate how different type preferences affect how people take in information. Do you prefer to take in information in a sequential or big picture way
9
Psychological Type and the Dichotomies
Do you make decisions by stepping back with an objective view or by stepping into the situation with an empathetic view?
10
Psychological Type and the Dichotomies
Do you prefer a planned or a spontaneous approach to meeting a deadline?
12
MBTI 16 distinct types

MBTI Insights Can help you consider how to draw upon preferred type and be aware of less preferred type that you can explore further. Should be taken as a contributor to a larger journey of personal work. What do you hope to get from this assessment? How do plan to apply the assessment to your life?
