Page 1 and 2: Vocabulary Meiosis- cell division in which eggs and sperm are made Gamete- eggs and sperm cells Oogenesis- the production of eggs Spermatogenesis- the production of sperm Diploid Cell- a cell with two copies of each chromosome Haploid Cell- a cell with one copy of each chromosome (Gametes) Human Chromosomes: 23 different chromosomes (Haploid Number) 46 chromosomes in most cells (Diploid Number) Zygote- after the sperm fertilizes the egg until eight weeks, diploid cells Fetus- an unborn individual from eight weeks after fertilization until birth Allele- a form of a gene (The gene would be eye color, the alleles would be brown and blue) Homologous Chromosome- pairs of chromosomes with the same genes, though they may have different alleles Tetrad- A pair of homologous chromosomes.

Page 4: Interphase The cell is doing it’s regular business. Three distinct parts Gap 1: The cell does it’s regular business S phase: Chromosomes Replicate Gap 2: The cell does it’s regular business before going through cell division
6
Page 5: Meiosis I - Prophase I
DNA condenses into chromosomes Chromosomes pair up into Tetrads Crossing-over occurs Nuclear Membrane disappears
7
Page 6: Meiosis I – Crossing Over
Homologous Chromosomes exchange genetic material with non-sister chromatids resulting in new combinations of alleles

Page 15: Differences Between Oogenesis and Spermatogenesis
Oogenesis Creates Egg Cells Begins before Birth Creates 1 Haploid Cell Discards other products of Meiosis (called Polar Bodies) Spermatogenesis Creates Sperm Cells Begins at Puberty Creates 4 Haploid Cells Discards Nothing
