Mitosis and Meiosis
2
mitosis A process of cell division that forms two new nuclei, each of which has the same number of chromosomes. Occurs in eukaryotic cells
4
meiosis A process of cell division during which the number of chromosomes decreases to half the original number, and results in 4 new haploid cells. Produces sex cells (sperm & egg) Haploid: half the original number of chromosomes
6
Meiosis Meiosis animation: 4 daughter cells produced
Each daughter cell has half the chromosomes of the parent 2 sets of cell division involved Same steps as in mitosis Meiosis animation:
7
This may help you remember these terms:
MITosis takes the cell and Makes It Two (diploid=n) Meiosis has to do with sex From the cell’s point of view: mITosis results in Identical Twins mEioSis results in Egg and Sperm (haploid=2n) Clyde Freeman Herreid – Dept. of Biological Sciences: Buffalo State Univ. of New York
