1 YOU HAVE 15 MINUTES TO MAKE THESE IN YOUR NOTES
Frayer Model Warm-up FRAYER MODEL Create a frayer model for the following 5 words Diploid Haploid Homologous Chromosomes Gametes Crossing Over YOU HAVE 15 MINUTES TO MAKE THESE IN YOUR NOTES

2 MEIOSIS NOTES Meiosis – process of reduction division in which the number of chromosomes per cell is cut in half through the separation of homologous chromosomes in a diploid cells This is Gamete Production- in other words, this is how our sex cells are made

3 Gametes – the reproductive sex cell (male or female)
contain ½ the # of chromosomes found in a normal cell Only 1 copy of each gene is passed on to an offspring

4 Haploid = 1 set of chromosomes “gamete” (in humans n=23)
Diploid = 2 sets of chromosomes “normal” (in humans 2n=46)

5 Homologous Chromosomes – chromosomes that have a corresponding chromosome from the opposite sex parent (for the same trait)

6 There are 2 stages -- Meiosis I and Meiosis II
PI MI AI TI result in 2 diploid daughter cells PII MII AII TII result in 4 haploid daughter cells

7 chromosomes are replicated (interphase)
Prophase I – chromosomes appear Metaphase I – chromosomes line up in the center in homologous pairs (called tetrads)

8 4. Anaphase I – homologous chromosomes are pulled apart (still look like an “X” after they are pulled apart) 5. Telophase I – 2 haploid daughter cells

9

10 6. Prophase II – chromosomes still present
7. Metaphase II – chromosomes line up in the center (no longer in homologous pairs) 8. Anaphase II – chromosomes are pulled apart (centromeres split) 9. Telophase II – 4 different haploid daughter cells

11 Meiosis II Prophase II Metaphase II Anaphase II Telophase II
Meiosis I results in two haploid (N) daughter cells, each with half the number of chromosomes as the original. The chromosomes line up in a similar way to the metaphase stage of mitosis. The sister chromatids separate and move toward opposite ends of the cell. Meiosis II results in four haploid (N) daughter cells.

12 Combinations and Crossing Over
23 chromosomes can segregate in 223 ways → More than 8 million possible combinations

13 Crossing over – exchange of portions of chromatids (genetic material) between 2 homologous chromosomes during prophase 1

15 Bell Ringer Complete the bell ringer and Glue it into your Journal on your next page of notes. Then wait for instructions.

16 MITOSIS VS MEIOSIS POSTERS
You are placed in groups of 4, This will be your working group. You will work with your group to complete your anchor chart assignment and then teach it to the group sitting across from you. LEFT SIDE OF ROOM RIGHT SIDE OF ROOM Make a Double bubble map comparing MITOSIS and MEIOSIS. (then write a paragraph explaining the similarities and differences below) Make a Flow Map (using only illustrations) for the steps of MEIOSIS 1 and 2. (then write a paragraph below explaining the process)

17 18 MINUTES!!!!! LEFT SIDE OF ROOM RIGHT SIDE OF ROOM Make a Double bubble map comparing MITOSIS and MEIOSIS. (then write a paragraph explaining the similarities and differneces below) Make a Flow Map (using only illustrations) for the steps of MEIOSIS 1 and 2. (then write a paragraph below explaining the process) If you finish… Get your poster copied down into your notes journal.

18 Now you will explain your anchor chart and read your paragraph to the group across the room from you as they copy down your illustration in their notes Minutes
