Outline Background Scientific Problem Study Factors
Computing and Data Model Technologies Summary and Conclusion
3
Addis Ababa’s Rivers background
A city with a number of rivers stretching over 400KM in length No clear rules/regulations on how to keep them clean No meaningful enforcement of some form of “rules” to their cleanliness Practically WASTE DISPOSALS and OPEN SEWERS Trash Human waste Industrial waste background
4
City Government The Addis Ababa City Government is interested to monitor the situation of the rivers throughout the year Researchers need these data on daily basis Two main tasks: Data Acquisition Data Analysis scientific problem

Formal Data Acquisition- Web
End-User Web Portal Users insert status of rivers/riversides GPS location Local name of rivers Status (pre-defined) … Users search and access Rivers/Riversides’ current status (graphical Reports) Administrators Web Portal: Data integrity checking Administrative maintenance of status, names, … computing and data model
13
Community Data Acquisition – Mobile
Ordinary Citizens Citizen Scientists computing and data model Passer-by data acquisition Advantage: GPS location auto-insert Selected from community schools presiding along the stretch of the rivers Students Teachers
