Genetics Crime Lab Overview
2
Kidnapping?!?!?! We are investigating the possible kidnapping of 5 children by the very suspicious Mr. And Mrs. Dorag. (All hypothetical of course!) Students will use their knowledge of key genetic concepts (as well some art) to help determine the guilt or innocence of the accused. Since most of the work should be completed with time provided here at school, you may not see much (if any of it) being worked on at home. To help you know if your student is staying on track with their work, I will be doing 5 checkpoint grades (each is worth 10 points for completion) during the project. These are listed both in PowerSchool and on my calendar. IMPORTANT Note: This project has 35 different outcomes so each student in a class has a different set of papers. If your student needs an extra copy, they will have to get it from me. (I can’t send it through or post them on the calendar.)

Checkpoints & Completion Timeline Below is a list of the checkpoint due dates:
Project Checkpoints(Due at the end of the period unless stated.) Check Point Date Complete Parent Mug-shots 2/21 Complete Children’s Mug-shots 2/23 Complete Punnett Squares 3/1 Fill in Children’s Genotypes 3/1 Complete Yes/No Charts 3/6 Outline 3/7 Due Date:(due at start of period) 3/10

What if they are falling behind?
If you see that your student is falling behind on their checkpoints, please encourage them to bring home their work. A student may not earn back additional points on a check point however the work will be included in the next check point grade. (Example: if student earns a 7/10 on checkpoint 1, they can only receive a 10/10 on checkpoint 2 if they have completed the work from the previous step as well as the current step.) Overall, the project is worth 220 points. You can view the rubric on the next slide.
