1 5th Grade Science Lesson 2: 504, 506 September 11, 2017

2 Objective: To speak together in ENGLISH and come up with a group plan to build your solar oven. How to do it: 1st Each of you make your own drawing of your ideas. 2nd Discuss what is best in each person’s diagram. (English ONLY!) 3rd Then you decide what the group’s solar oven will look like. 4th Then you LABEL the parts: bottom, black cooking container, plastic bag or glass container, reflectors, insulators

3 Notebook Add to Table of Contents Class rules

4 Class rules Follow Class Procedures * Speak English Show Respect *
Be Accountable * * Especially seen at Clean UP!

6 Lesson Objective Page Date: 9/11 Topic: Objectives and Take Aways
Date Objective Take Away 9/11 Make a group plan for our I can bring a glass solar oven with a labeled food container diagram next week (Page 5)

7 Vocabulary Heat- moving particles (atoms, molecules, etc.)
Insulators – things that keep heat in or out Reflectors – things that make light bounce off and go in a different direction (ex: mirrors) Containers – things that hold other things Absorb (v.) – to take in

8 Design and Materials The food will go into a darkened (black) pot, glass bowl or can (I will bring these next week, but you can bring your own cooking pot if you want). A place to set the can on (a bottom) A clear plastic zip lock bag, a piece of clear plastic or glass to cover the food. A way to focus the sunlight toward the food. A way to keep the heat in (if using a box)

9 Solar Cooker Designs

10

11 Pictures, Videos and Resources
This is a simple design, but you don’t need the glass . Also you don’t need to glue the black cloth inside or line the outside of the box in black cloth. Solar Oven Smores: Want more examples? Here’s a 30 minunte video with more. Complex example- we cannot build this in school (sorry!).

12 Analysis Watch the video. Ask yourself what is the same, and what is different amongst the three models of solar cookers. You need one variable only to do a good science experiment. Everything else should stay the same.
