7 The Lord’s Day

8 Two Mindsets Two ways to approach devotion to God: 1. Preconceived notions 2. Seeking to be approved (2 Tim. 2:15) 2Ti 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

9 Two Mindsets Seeking to be approved in communion - Finding the purpose and intent - Finding the means of observation - Finding the very hints of God

10 Finding God’s Purpose Jesus said we would take it regularly 1 Corinthians 11:25-26 Christians met regularly to take it Acts 2:42 1 Cor 11:25 In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes. Act 2:42 They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer

11 Finding God’s Purpose What could regularly mean? Annually? The anniversary of Passover? Monthly? The beginning or end? Weekly? Sabbath? Thursday?

12 Finding God’s Purpose The concept of a seven day week The importance of the first day Light - Genesis 1:3, John 1:3-4 The importance of the last day Rest from labors – Gen. 1, Heb. 4 But while the movement of Earth and Sun give us natural concepts like days and years and the Moon's phases give us the month, there is no such natural reason for a seven-day week. The earliest record of 7 day weeks are ancient Babylon. It existed in China, India, Ancient Greece Joh 1:3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. 5 ¶ The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

13 Finding God’s Purpose Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight Acts 20:7

14 Finding God’s Purpose The first day of the week: The Day of Jesus Resurrection The Day of Pentecost Is it the same as “the Lord’s Day”?

15 Understanding the Lord’s Day
I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like the sound of a trumpet Revelation 1:10 NOT the “Day of the Lord” (judgment) A day that belongs to the Lord Passover began the worship of Israel

16 Understanding the Lord’s Day
What is the Lord’s Day? - Earliest mention = first day of the week - Not the Sabbath - Done away with in Christ (Col. 2:16) - The Sabbath belong(s) to man (Mr. 2:27) Didache , chapter 14:  Christian Assembly on the Lord's Day. But every Lord's day gather yourselves together, and break bread, and give thanksgiving after having confessed your transgressions, that your sacrifice may be pure. Col 2:16 Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day-- 17 things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ. Mr 2:27 And He said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.

17 Understanding the Lord’s Day
What is the Lord’s Day? First Day of the Week Are we permitted to do other things? - Sabbath was a day of rest, not worship - Lord’s Day is for worship, edification - It does not prohibit doing other things - Work, recreation, etc. 1Co 11:18 For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that divisions exist among you; and in part I believe it. 19 For there must also be factions among you, so that those who are approved may become evident among you. 20 Therefore when you meet together, it is not to eat the Lord's Supper, 21 for in your eating each one takes his own supper first; and one is hungry and another is drunk.

18 Understanding the Lord’s Day
What is the Lord’s Day? First Day of the Week Are we permitted to do other things? Yes What would happen if the week changed? - Jewish days were measured night to night - NT writers adapted to audiences (Jn. 19:14) - There is always a first day of the week Joh 19:14 Now it was the day of preparation for the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. And he *said to the Jews, "Behold, your King!"

19 This is the Day the Lord Made
This day is important - It belongs to the Lord - It belongs with His people We owe Jesus what belongs to Him today - We are permitted to keep what remains

20

21 The Day of the Lord Comes as a thief in the night Matthew 24:43 – Judgment of God 1 Thessalonians 5:2 – Resurrection 2 Peter 3:10 – Destruction of the earth

22 The Day of the Lord Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! 2 Peter 3:11-12
